So, we meet again? It feels like yesterday that we just spoke of this rivalry game between New Mexico and State. Wait? It was just a few days ago, wasn’t it?
We have ourselves a rematch from the November 30th meeting between these two rival programs, and we are giving them a 10-point head start because of what they did last week. The Lobos took a 101 – 94 upset win over the Aggies and here are the Lobos as the home dogs this time around.
The Lobos have not played a game since their November 30th encounter while the Aggies took out UTEP, 72 – 69, this past Friday night on the road.
Might we be seeing another crazy, high-scoring affair on Monday evening in Albuquerque? Oh, let’s see what we can expect.
New Mexico State Aggies
The Aggies improved to 6 – 2 on Friday night after their second win over UTEP this season, and now they get to face rival New Mexico for a second time as well. The Aggies are hoping for a different result after giving up 104 points to the Lobos that left this team 5 – 2 at the time.
The Aggies ultimately lost that first meeting with the Lobos in the first half, as a 49 – 42 opening stanza led to an equal 52 – 52 second half. Teddy Allen and Sirbajari Rice each played 38 minutes of the game and that is something they are both used to by now.
You can clearly see on the team stat sheet this year that only two players average above 30 minutes a night for Head Coach Chris Jans. Allen is playing 33.5 minutes a night and Rice is close behind at 31.9 minutes on the floor per game.
Don’t let that fool you into thinking this is a two-man team because Coach Jans has plenty of depth on this roster to rely on and he just lets his two leaders stay out there as long as they can stay productive. Coach has had 10 players play in each of the 8 games this season and he has found minutes for his third-string options as well.
Teddy Allen will likely be back again next season and he has obviously worked on his leadership role coming into the 2021 season. It is not simply his scoring numbers that are up and you can see it in his game. His rebounding numbers are up and that free-throw percentage, baby! When you are hitting over 90% of your charity stripe opportunities, you know that the hard work is paying off.
New Mexico Lobos
DOGS! Again? Wait, didn’t we just dump 104 points on this team a few days ago?
That has to be the feeling for a team that just walked into the Aggies barn and dumped triple-digits on them.
Hey, are you old enough to remember when Jamal Mashburn was a ridiculous stud when he was playing in college? Oh, yeah, I am 52 so I can recall that shit like it was yesterday and that dude could fucking ball like a Mutha… Something!
So, Jamal decided to go on and bring some kids into the world and he said to his firstborn, “Son, I am going to teach you how to kick some NCAA ASS, and we’ll work on the pro stuff later.”
Don’t believe me? Well, there are only so many dudes putting up over 20 points a night in college hoops, about 30 or so. Jamal Jr. is one of them and his 20.4 PPG has him at 21st in the nation in scoring coming into Monday night’s home affair.
The Lobos know how to win at The Pit and they have been it for years, upon years, and then a few more years! This program has played 4 home games in 2021, and I will give you one shot at their home record?
You guessed it because no one has come in here and won yet and anyone who follows college hoops knows that the Lobos are just tough in this building. The end of last season didn’t go so well here, but this team still knows they can win here and they have the confidence of knowing they can beat this Aggies team to boot.
What Mashburn can’t do, Jaelen House seems to be right there to pick up any slack as he too is up on the scoring leaderboards. House is putting up over 18 points a night and do you want to talk about improvement? House was NOT a household name coming into this year, as he was basically a supporting player contributing about 5 points a night the last two years.
