The New Mexico Lobos will travel and take on the Colorado State Rams for a Mountain West Conference clash this Wednesday.
Colorado State is favored to win at home here.
New Mexico Lobos
New Mexico has started Mountain West play with four straight losses, but they’ve been quietly competitive in three of those. The Lobos took leads into halftime against Nevada and Utah State, and the Aggies needed overtime to prevail. UNM lost to Boise State in their last time out, after a late second rally wouldn’t be enough, 71-63.
Jamal Mashburn Jr. followed head coach Richard Pitino over from Minnesota and has been given the green light early. The 6’2 guard similarly scores in bunches like father did just over 20 years ago. Mashburn Jr. scored a career-high 29 points in the overtime lose to Utah State, and he leads the team in scoring at 18.1 points per game.
Jaelen House transferred over from Arizona State to give the Lobos one of their most explosive backcourts in recent memory. The 6′ guard has also received more free reign in Albuquerque, and it’s led to a career-best 15.9 ppg and a team-leading 4.7 apg.
Javonte Johnson gives the Lobos a strong defender on the wing, capable of knocking down the three-point shot. He scored a career-high 23 points on 7-9 shooting from deep against Utah State, and scores 8.5 ppg, while grabbing 5.2 rpg.
An injury to big man Gethro Muscadin has led to the Lobos going small, and it’s cost them on both sides of the ball.
Colorado State Rams
Colorado State jumped out to one of the best starts in school history, but a strong resume that includes wins over Creighton, Mississippi State, and St. Mary’s. The Rams have started Mountain West play 3-1, and their coming off of their biggest win of the season, a 78-42 thumping of San Jose State.
The Rams thrive as one of the most efficient teams in the country. They nationally rank seventh in field goal percentage (50.3), third in free throw percentage (81%), and tenth in three point percentage (40.1%).
David Roddy has been the key cog to this machine thus far. The 6’6 junior followed up a 30-point performance against Bradley with a career-high 36 points in the win over Creighton back in November, and he double-doubled in the win over Utah State.
Roddy will like lead the team in scoring for a second season, as he’s up to 18.9 ppg, while also leading the team in rebounding (7.9)
Fellow junior Isaiah Stevens has brought a lot of poise and playmaking to the backcourt. Th 6′ guard has posted three double-doubles, and he’s second on the team in scoring (14.6) and leads CSU with 5.9 apg.
John Tonje was also apart of that 2019 class, and he’s the Rams third-leading scorer in his third season at 10.3 ppg.
Dischon Thomas hovers Roddy up front, and he scored a career-high 21 points in the win over Creighton.
CBB Betting Trends:
- UNM is 5-10 ATS in their last 15 games.
- CSU is 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games.
- Over is 4-1 in the Lobos last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
Free New Mexico Lobos vs. Colorado State Rams NCAAB Prediction: UNM/CSU to go Over
Colorado State has one of those players who’s capable of single-handledly taking over and winning games. Players we like to bet on.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Over 152.2
Colorado State should thrive against this feisty, but tremendously undersized New Mexico team. Another big defeat could be in line, but the over is certainly in play here due to the lack of defense that may be played here. While New Mexico does have a crafty group of guards capable of putting up points, they will have no answer for David Roddy in the front court. He should have his way, and so should the rest of the 13-1 Rams.
Take the over for this Mountain West matchup, and give Colorado State’s blowout spread a look.
