Monmouth Hawks
Monmouth jumped out to a strong start during non-conference play, picking up qualities wins over Cincinnati, Princeton, Pittsburgh and near-win over St. John’s. The Hawks missed a month of action then proceeded to drop their first three MAAC games. They’ve since recovered, and if that can catch Iona, they have as good a resume as anyone.
Fifth-year senior George Papas has played big this season. The 6’5 guard scored a season-high of 31 points in the win over Lehigh, and he’s hit four or more threes in four of his last six games. If he has a big game, things usually go well for the Hawks.
Papas is leading the team with 16.2 points per game, while posting 5.9 pg and 3.1 apg.
Fellow fifth-year senior Marcus McClary scores 9.5 ppg, and brings more experienece to the lineup.
Walker Miller (UNC) and Shavar Reynolds Jr. (Seton Hall) transferred in from bigger schools and have flourished with additional playing time in Long Branch. Miller has asserted himself as a force down low. Despite never averaging more than one point over four seasons at UNC, Miller is scoring an impressive 14.8 ppg, while grabbing 6.4 rpg.
Reynolds Jr., a Jersey native, scored 21 points in the loss to Iona, and he’s third on the team in scoring (14.6)
Quinnipiac Bobcats
Quinnipiac’s MAAC road struggles continued last week. The Bobcats blew halftime leads against Siena and St. Peter’s and fell to 1-4 as visitors in conference play.
Matt Balanc has enjoyed a bigger role here in year three. The 6’4 guard scored 20 points in the win over Marist, and he leads the team in scoring at. 14.8 points per game.
Kevin Marfo has been a problem for opposing frontcourts this season. The 6’9 forward is one of the best rebounders in the country, and he’s double-doubled in four of the last five games. Marfo is averaging 10.7 ppg, and a conference-leading 10.8 rpg.
Dezi Jones has reached double figures in each of the last five games, and he’s third on the team in scoring at 10.1 ppg.
