The SEC / Big 12 Challenge brings the Miss State Bulldogs and Texas Tech Red Raiders together for what’s expected to be a pretty good matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Red Raiders are trying to get back on track after losing their big Monday clash with Kansas last time out, 94 – 91 in double-overtime.
After climbing 5 spots from 18th to 13th in the national rankings, the Red Raiders certainly have to find a win at home to extend their wins streak in Lubbock to 13 straight this season.
The Bulldogs are also trying to rebound from an overtime loss as the Kentucky Wildcats eked out an 82 – 74 win dropping the Mississippi State record to 13 – 6 and 4 – 3 in SEC play.
Mississippi State Bulldogs
Miss State has been to Lubbock twice, but none of these players were anywhere near this court the last time they played here in 2015. The Bulldogs have lost both of their trips to Lubbock suffering a 74 – 72 setback in 2018 and a 77 – 73 defeat in 2008. Head Coach Ben Howland, however, was here for that 2015 loss which was a non-conference defeat in his first season running the Bulldogs program.
Howland has been here a long time and he certainly knows how to motivate his players to get the most out of them. Howland has gotten this program to the NIT Final Four twice since taking over in 2015 and I think you can go read his history for yourself. IT goes without saying he has earned the respect of the players and the University as well.
Regardless, a big showing is a must tonight because another loss will not be a good way to get back to SEC play having the Gamecocks, Hogs, and Vols up next to resume the conference schedule after this SEC Big 12 Challenge outing.
The Bulldogs are also 0 – 3 in their travels this season and the line setters seem to point towards that turning into an 0 – 4 marking them as +7.5 dogs in Lubbock. All of those losses have come during SEC play and the Bulldogs may have taken Kentucky to overtime but it was a big flop from there.
The Bulldogs only scored 2 points in the entire 5-minute extra frame at Kentucky and now they have to travel to another place that is extremely tough to find wins for road teams.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
The Red Raiders couldn’t prevent Ochai Agbaji from lifting the Kansas Jayhawks to a 94 – 91 double-overtime win last Monday, so Texas Tech is hoping some home cooking can get them back on track again.
This team has beaten Baylor in Waco and they have handed that same Kansas program one of their 2 lone losses in 2022 as well. Coach Adams has made the transition from assistant to head whistle-blower seamlessly and he certainly knows who provides the leadership when it is needed. This is a team with a lot of upperclassmen experience and it has helped keep the program together into the Adams era.
Bryson Williams did all he could to compete with Agbaji finding 33 points while shooting a ridiculous 14 of 19 from the field. He buried all 3 of his attempts from behind the arc as he and Agbaji basically carried their teams at times. We called that game and I am telling you I am still recovering from the excitement that a double-overtime game can bring.
Just when we thought Terry Shannon had broken out of his funk, he returned to his struggling ways against Kansas finding only 5 points from a 1 of 10 shooting day. Kevin McCullar also struggled big-time from the floor converting only 1 of his 11 attempts in the game scoring only 2 points.
The defensive rankings keep moving in the other direction the more games this team play. Now, the Red Raiders are back at 21st in the nation allowing 60.8 PPG which is up from when this team was 5th in the land in defensive scoring.
