Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena will host this early-season Big Ten conference matchup between the 7-3 Spartans and the 5-4 Wildcats. The Big Ten is off to a logjam start, with 12 of the 14 conference teams holding 1-1 records to begin the season.
The Wildcats will be looking for their first conference win, while the Spartans will be looking to take an early one-game lead atop the Big 10.
Michigan State Spartans
The defending champs come into Wednesday’s matchup on a two-game winning streak, including a 12-point win over Rutgers and a 30-point blowout over Oakland.

Their early season start has them ranked 15th in the AP Top 25 Poll, but KenPom’s ratings has them at fifth in the nation behind their third-rated adjusted offense. Additionally, two of their three losses have come at the hands of top-10 teams.
Tom Izzo’s squads are always talented and this one is no different. Their team is again powered by senior guard Cassius Winston, who’s off to a phenomenal season start averaging 16.9 points and six assists per game on 40.3/33.3/88.1 shooting splits.
Northwestern Wildcats
The Wildcats lost their first conference game at the hands of the Purdue Boilermakers (58-44 final score). The team bounced back with a dominating 18-point victory over the SIU Edwardsville Cougars on Sunday, but given the Cougars’ 2-8 record (and 10th-to-last KenPom rating), I wouldn’t say that is much of a resume-booster.
Northwestern’s defense has been their strength, as their 62 points allowed per game has them top-50 in the nation. The Wildcat’s frontcourt, consisting of Pete Nance, Miller Kopp and Ryan Young, is the engine that powers the team’s success.
However, their offense is one of the worst in the nation, by both KenPom rating and points scored per game. Additionally, their backcourt is shaky at best. Senior PG Pat Spencer averages just over 10 points per game on 41.8/31.6/76.9 shooting splits, but turns the ball over almost three times per game while only averaging about four assists per game.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Michigan State is 18-7 ATS in their last 25 against the Big Ten.
- Northwestern is 6-19-1 in their last 26 against the Big Ten.
- Road team is 14-6 ATS in last 20 meetings.
Free Michigan State Spartans vs. Northwestern Wildcats NCAAB Prediction: Michigan State and the Under.
Northwestern has had some good defensive performances this year, but they haven’t faced a team of Michigan State’s caliber.
Given past performances, I don’t see Northwestern scoring more than about 60 points in this spot. I believe the defense will travel for Michigan State, especially considering this weak Wildcat offense. But their offense might not, as they only managed 72 points at Oakland and 75 at UCLA, with the under hitting in both those games.
I see a low-scoring game here, but I think the Spartans will have enough firepower to cover whatever the spread ends up being.
