The Miami Hurricanes improved to 17 – 7 last time out as a great team victory propelled the Canes to a 9 – 4 record in ACC play to boot. Miami had 5 players throw down double-digits against Georgia Tech and the win came after the Canes had suffered back-to-back setbacks to Notre Dame and Virginia.
In case you hadn’t noticed, there are 6 programs in the chase for the top seed in the upcoming ACC tourney and we’re about to get into two of them right here. The Canes are currently tied at 9 – 4 in ACC play with North Carolina and they are both only a game back of Duke chasing the top of the Mountain. Duke and Notre Dame are deadlocked at 10 – 3 on top of the ACC standings and there sits this Wake team in between all of them.
Wake Forest is the only other 20-win program other than Duke in the ACC coming into this weekend and the line setters are pointing to another Deacon win favoring them by -7.5 points on the early line. Let’s not just assume that Wake is going to handle the Canes because the oddsmakers want you to think that way. This should be among the best games of the Saturday slate and I expect a tighter affair than the experts expect.
Miami Hurricanes
So, you want to give me a touchdown and change with a Canes team that is in every game, every night? All right, the Canes have taken a few ugly losses when they do go down, but this is the money part of the season where stars are born.
WHen Miami lost by 13 to Virginia, a lot of people started to doubt the validity of this being an At-large bid program in the big dance. With 3 more wins, a 20-win campaign might look pretty good for the Canes to, at least, gain entry to one of the post-season tourneys this season. No one wants to settle for an NIT or CBI showing but any reason to play more basketball past the end of the regular season still builds camaraderie for the upcoming season
n the win over Tech last time out, all 5 starters found their way to 10 or more points, and just as you have seen me say a bunch around here there is no bench to find in Miami. Head Coach Jim Larrañaga does his best to keep all 5 of his guys on the floor at this point, and unless foul trouble or something big happens he is content to leave his starters out there for as long as he can.
It’s proven to be a smart move considering the 5 of them are working well together with Barnsley Joseph getting his minutes off the bench. Joseph found the only 4 points the 3 subs provided, although Gak and Poplar only combined to see 13 minutes of time on the court.
Sam Waardenburg led the way with 19 points for the Canes in the win and he played 38 of the 40 minutes in the game. He and teammate Anthony Walker each found 8 rebounds but as a team, the Canes shot a dismal 5 for 22 from behind the arc. Shocker, the Canes are ranked 301st in the nation from the 3-point line so that approach was never a good idea to begin with.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake Forest is among the 20-win programs and they are certainly in line for an at-large bid in the big dance. The bubble could be popped with a poor finish but the line setters don’t see them struggling tonight to find a W against Miami.
Steve Forbes is finally doing what he expected to when he came to Wake Forest a year ago, but things are going much more smoothly than they did last season. Remember now, Wake was 6 – 16 in Forbes’ first season taking over the program after all of that success at ETSU. The Decons haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2017 when they bowed out early as a First Four participant. A post-season appearance of some type is certainly in the cards, however, but a nice run to the regular-season finish line and a deep run in the ACC Tournament would bode well to increase the committee’s favoritism.
The Deacons have won 7 of their last 8 games and are putting their modest 3-game win streak on the line tonight. Last time out against North Carolina State, The Deacons blew the Wolfpack out of the forest with a convincing 69 – 51 win. Alondes Williams led the way with 17 points and he took in 15 of those in the second stanza.
Williams is leading Wake putting up 19.6 PPG this season and he needed to give the late effort as the team was struggling without him. This is yet another program with not much to speak of when the bench comes in to get some time. In the win over Tech, Khadim Sy scored 13 points. All right, and there is your bench production for the night to speak of so that’s that.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Hurricanes are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
- Hurricanes are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- Over is 5-2 in Demon Deacons’ last 7 overall.
- Over is 28-13 in Demon Deacons’ last 41 home games.
Free Miami Hurricanes vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons NCAAB Betting Prediction:
I still find it amazing that these benches are really not going to provide much but the line setters are still expecting 150 points to come in this game. The total is 149 and 149.5 out there on the early line and that could change by morning. I see this as a tight game regardless and 7.5 points are just too many to give me.
