Their two-point home win against Nebraska, while quite pathetic, marks their 7th straight W. They are now 10-3 in conference play this season, atop the Big Ten and looking at a pretty high seed for the tournament.
And, it’s all thanks to Anthony Cowan Jr. and an unreal defense. The Terrapins are 5th in KenPom adjusted defense, and top-20 in factors such as effective FG% against, 2pt% against, DRtg, and points allowed per game.
And, Cowan Jr. has been the spark behind their offensive attack, and has been a massive part of this winning streak. In these past 7 games, the young guard is averaging 17 points, 6 assists and a steal. Cowan is phenomenal at getting to the charity stripe, and making his free throws. During this stretch, he’s averaging 8 FTA/game and is making them at an 82% rate. Pretty good!
Additionally, it’s important to note the importance of their star Center, Jalen Smith. He’s also been an animal over the past 7 games and is such a great compliment to Cowan Jr.
The great thing about this Maryland team is their balance. They remind me of the Lakers; i.e., they have two star players who drive their attack offensively and defensively, but a ton of really great role players who all compliment each other. Maryland is firing on all cylinders right now and are a team to be afraid of.
Michigan State Spartans
After dropping three straight games, Izzo and the Spartans bounced back with a massive road win against the Fighting Illini.
Although they blew a massive second half lead, and didn’t cover, serious questions would have arisen about the state of the Spartans. Instead, they go into this Saturday evening matchup just 1.5 GB of the Terps for first place in the Big Ten.
And, what a battle it will be. Because the Spartans still have a top-20 offense, a top-20 defense, and Cassius Winston. Three factors alone that can lead to another National Title.
Or, they can drop this home game against the Terps and we’ll be back to square one: Casting serious doubts on the Spartans to pull down another Big Ten championship.

However, i’m not going to bet against Izzo in this spot. This is where Izzo tends to shove it down everyone’s throat: Coming off three straight losses, at home against the top team in the conference, with all the odds stacked against him.
Also, Michigan State is really good at home. Other than that home loss to Penn State (who are really, really good), they’ve been pretty nails at Breslin the rest of the season.
Finally, we just can’t forget how good the Spartans can be. Maryland is having a heck of the season, and if they were to somehow meet in the tournament I can’t imagine picking against them. But, in this situation, I’m taking the home side.
