Two of the bottom teams in the Big East will square off in a mid-week matchup when the Marquette Golden Eagles travel to the site of the 2021 NCAA Tournament at Hinkle Field House to take on the Butler Bulldogs.
Butler is coming off a blowout loss to Georgetown on the road 78-63, while Marquette lost a close one against the Seton Hall Pirates over the weekend 76-70.
Marquette Golden Eagles
Marquette started out the season strong with quality wins over Creighton and Wisconsin to begin the season, but have been floundering as of lately. Since starting out 5-2, the Golden Eagles have gone 4-10 and look like the team we expected to see without Markus Howard at the point.
The positives have been few and far between for Maquette this year, but the future is looking bright for Steve Wojciechowski’s team. Leading scorer Dawson Garcia will definitely return next season as he is just a freshman and is averaging 13.2 points per game and hauling a team-high 6.7 rebounds. They will also most likely retain his sidekick in sought-out transfer D.J. Carton, from Ohio State who chips in 12.7 points and 3.7 assists per game.
The Golden Eagles average 70.14 points per game this season which is 217th in the nation, but only 68.5 points when it comes to conference play which is 9th in the Big East.
Marquette gives up an average of 70.48 points per contest on the year, which puts them 187th in the country in the defensive category. They allow opponents to shoot 41.37% from the field and 36.46% from beyond the arc.
Butler Bulldogs
The Butler Bulldogs will try to end their season on a high note after struggling to find consistent play all season. They have had multiple slow starts over the last month and find themselves in holes early that they can’t seem to get out of. In four of their last six games, they have faced double-digit deficits at one point.
Bo Hodges becoming eligible for LaVell Jordan has been pretty big for them offensively. It may not reflect in the win/loss column, but they are definitely more competitive than they were to begin the season. Hodges leads the Butler scoring attack with 11.4 points per game (only has played 5 games). South Carolina transfer Jair Bolden is the team’s second-leading scorer with 11.2 points per game. As a team, the Bulldogs average 63.7 points per game which 325th in all of college basketball.
In conference play, the Bulldogs average 63.2 points per game which is only more than DePaul who currently sits in 11th place in the Big East.
They surrender 67.72 points per game defensively, which makes them the second-best defensive team in the conference behind UConn.

Free Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Butler Bulldogs NCAAB Prediction:
I lean with Butler at home in this matchup. When they are healthy they are the better team, but they have dealt with lingering injuries all season. Aaron Thompson has not looked the same since returning from injury and he was supposed to be the main facilitator in the offense this season for LaVell Jordan. Thompson has been absolutely awful away from Hinkle this season and has crossed the double-digit scoring threshold just one time. He is averaging 7.5 points on the road this season compared to the 13.7 points at home. Luckily for him, he gets this matchup with Marquette at home where Butler is 6-1 SU in their last 7 games versus Marquette and 8-3 SU their last 11 games overall. I think Butler can go on a run here down the stretch just like last year’s Providence team who won the last 7 straight games to end the season. Give me Butler and the number to cover as small home favorites.
