We are going to need your whereabouts on the night of 15 January so please come with me down to the briefing room. Now, let’s talk about where these two programs were that night and what has transpired since then.
LSU Tigers… This program is 15 – 1 before the Arkansas game on January 15 and then the wheels simply fell off the bus. When you now see 16 – 7 and think about a 15 – 1 start, that tells you that the Tigers are 1 – 6 since then and everything has gone wrong that can go wrong since the loss to the Hogs! Murphy told us as much.
Texas A&M Aggies… After their win over Missouri on January 15, the Aggies improved to 15 – 2, and then, oh, you guessed it. The wheels really fell off as this team is 0 – 6 the last 6 games and 15 – 8 now coming into tonight’s affair with the TIgers.
At 4 – 6 in SEC play, both programs are desperately in need of a win for obvious reasons. The loser of this outing will basically be left for dead and we’re going to have to call 911 Emergency Services to bring in the jaws of life!
LSU Tigers
The Tigers are really playing bad basketball but hey, so is the program across the floor tonight. So, of course, the Tigers come into College Station favored by a bucket or so to win on the road as bad as they’ve been of late.
So, you want to hang your hat on your defense? All right, well, you can do that but you forget to address one little thing at practice all season long. SHOOT THE BALL!! This offense ranks 245 from behind the arc converting only 32.5% of their shots behind the 3-point line while sitting in the 199th slot in FG% only making 43.9% of their shots from the floor.
It’s not even the rankings so much as it is when you watch this team lately and the houses that have been built brick by brick during this 1 – 6 runs of results. Tari Eason seems to get stuck on 16 points every night now, and it’s like he gets there and the scoring just stops. Only once in his last 8 games has he gone over that mark and LSU needs him to be big on the glass every night as well. Eason is grabbing about 7 boards a night on top of leading this team in scoring.
Eason is only a sophomore and leading this team in scoring so hopefully next year he really works on his game to be a 20-point scorer that LSU will need over the next couple of seasons.
Texas A&M Aggies
The Aggies have lost their last 6 outings and that is certainly why they are home dogs on Tuesday night. I digress because the one thing A&M can do is score enough points to deal with the LSU defense. As soon as both of these programs got into the thick of SEC play, the reality of their non-conference schedules came to light.
The Aggies’ third loss in this 0 – 6 run was handed to them by this same LSU squad, so a little revenge is about to be served at College Station. For some reason, I want to think the dog in this spot because I am just not convinced that the LSU defense is good enough to stop the Aggies all night. Will there be minutes upon minutes of a scoreless draught? Oh hell yes there will be, but both of these teams will struggle shooting at times during this game.
Let’s not be all stupid and expect a high-scoring affair to take place here because shooting is what is keeping them both in check right now. The Aggies’ free-throw shooting numbers are a full-fledged disaster and the 332nd ranking for that 65.9% from the charity stripe is just ugly.
The Aggies rank 113th averaging 73.7 PPG, but you would never know that over this current 6-games losing streak. IF the Arkansas game hadn’t gone to OT the numbers over this run would be even more dismal.
Quenton Jackson came off the bench in the loss to Missouri last time out and he still is this team’s leading scorer averaging 13.1 PPG. Depth is not an issue for this Aggies squad but they just can’t seem to get back on track to where they were before January 15. That changes tonight because the Rainmaker said so!
