The #1 seeded Alabama Crimson Tide will be clashing with the #3 seed LSU Tigers in the SEC Championship on Sunday to see who will cash their automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
LSU advanced past Arkansas 78-71 on Saturday thanks to their three-point shooting, while Alabama needed to rally in the second half to take down Tennessee 73-68 in their semifinal game.
LSU Tigers
LSU got to move on the championship game thanks to a 21-point effort from freshman leading scorer Cam Thomas. His backcourt partner Javonte Smart added 19 points in the winning effort and a team-high four assists.
Will Wade’s crew enters the weekend slotted at #29 in the latest KenPom rankings after pushing their current winning streak to four games. Lunardi currently has the Tigers ensured as a #7 seed in the tournament right now, but I’m sure that will change with a victory over the Tide.
As a team, LSU averages 82.23 points per game which is ranked 8th in the country amongst D-1 teams. They are shooting 46.60% from the field and 34.94% from beyond the arc.
On defense, LSU has given up 99.2 points per 100 possessions for the year (125th in the NCAA) and 105.1 points per 100 possessions versus league opponents (9th in the SEC). The Tigers sport the third-best 3-point defense in the conference at 30.9 percent but they’ve fought on the defensive glass, sporting a defensive rebounding rate of only 67.8 percent.
Alabama Crimson Tide
Alabama overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to escape with a 73-68 victory versus Tennessee on Saturday. Herbert Jones finished with a team-high 21 points while Jahvon Quinerly chipped in 19 points for the Tide in the victory. Nate Oats’ unit enters the SEC Championship Game ranked #8 in the latest KenPom rankings and #6 in the current KenPom rankings. Bracketologist Joe Lunardi has slotted the Crimson Tide as a #3 seed in his latest NCAA Tournament projections.
Offensively, the Tide average the 7th most points per game in the country at 79.55 points per game. They shoot 43.04% from the floor and 35.16% from behind the three-point line. The Crimson Tide sport the #1 effective field goal percentage in the conference at 52.7 percent. Oats has given his team the green-light from long-range and they’ve responded by shooting a league-high 46.4 percent of their total field goal attempts from behind the 3-point line.
On defense, the Crimson Tide rank as the best defensive team in the country. Alabama has limited opponents to just 85.7 points per 100 possessions for the season (#1 in the NCAA). That number has held firm at a nations’-best 91.3 points per 100 possessions during conference play. Alabama also leads the SEC in effective field goal percentage defense (43.8%) and 3-point defense (25.9%) so far this year.

Free LSU Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide NCAAB Prediction:
I lean with the LSU Tigers in this third game against Alabama. In the first game against the Tide, LSU shot below 20% from the beyond the arc and Alabama shot over 60% from the three-point range. The Tigers are too good of a shooting team to lay another flat egg against Bama shooting-wise.
In the second game, LSU was without their forward Darius Days and when he plays and scores in double digits the Tigers are 18-1 on the season.
If the Tigers have the three-ball working for them I think they should be able to cover this game with ease, but if Alabama’s defense continues to smother as it has it’s going to be a long day for the Tigers in Nashville. Give me LSU to cover the spread and sprinkle a little on the Moneyline for them to win outright.
