The Long Beach State 49ers have won their last 9 games and yet here they are as +3.5 underdogs against a Hawaii squad that has lost their last 2 outings. I don’t know about you but I see ourselves in a good position to think dog and those are my two favorite words in the English language. Well, plus money is up there too but in this case, I think the points are looking good for us to jump all over.
The 49ers are in good spirits and this comes after a 5 – 9 disaster of a start to the season. Now at 14 – 9, it’s been a complete turnaround, and obviously, for the better. Senior Joe Hampton has struggled to stay healthy in his final season wearing a 9ers jersey, but his contributions are big when he is going right. Hampton is averaging just under double-digits for the year and he only managed to find 4 points last time out against Fullerton after missing another 3 straight games beforehand.
After covid-19 canceled 4 Hawaii games, the Rainbow Warriors reeled off 7 straight wins before their current 2-game losing slide. Last time out against UC-Davis, Hawaii lost a 3-point game, 68 – 65, even though the Aggies didn’t get a single point from their bench.
Long Beach State 49ers
I am going to keep this one nice and short because I truly believe that the 49ers should be favored in this spot even though some programs get caught up in the beautiful surroundings of Honolulu. That is easy to do, but Dan Monson has been here long enough to know how to keep his guys focused.
While Hampton deals with trying to stay on the floor this year, Joel Murray and Colin Slater have been a constant this season eating up minutes and leading the team in scoring. Murray is up to 16.2 PPG and Slater isn’t far behind bringing in 13.9 PPG and the two of them are expected to carry the load right now.
I still can’t get past this team’s free-throw shooting numbers because they rank166th in the country only making 71.6% of their attempts from the charity stripe. As you look over the top-5 scorers for the 9ers, all of them are excellent free throw shooters as most of those poor numbers come from guys we won’t be seeing on the floor tonight.
The 49ers had 4 starters land double-digits against Fullerton last time out and 3 players off the bench had 4 points apiece in the 71 – 61 upset win. Fullerton was favored by a bucket and it didn’t mean a thing to anyone around here! LB State knew they were winning that game and they went out and did just that. Tonight, expect it to happen again.
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
Hawaii is not winning this game and I could go on for hours about who to watch for and what to expect tonight. The Warriors will be scoring 63 points and losing this game when they allow the 9ers to walk onto their court with much more confidence than Hawaii has coming into this game.
Hawaii beat this Long Beach State team on January 8 and the 9ers haven’t lost a game since. Noel Coleman landed 22 points and led the way for Hawaii as he has done plenty of times this season. Coleman leads Hawaii putting up 14.5 PPG and this team shoots the 3-ball rather well while converting 37% of their shots from behind the arc (37th in the country).
Bernardo Da Silva has missed a handful of games this year but he is still having a great year after basically missing all of last season. He only played in 5 games and got his sophomore year of eligibility back.
You know the story. Bench production issues for this team as is the case with about 250 teams this year. There is not enough to talk about when it comes to any of the 3 subs we might see tonight for Hawaii so buckle up! Hawaii is about to go down in flames tonight!

My two favorite words are ‘think dog’ and they go nicely with the plus money theme too.
Keep your fucking points because we don’t need them tonight. The 49ers will win this game by 5 points and we don’t need any of those 3.5 points the line setters are offering us. Hey, if you want the points? Take them, dude, but here is the play where the money comes from…
