The SEC / Big 12 Challenge is on again and boy, do we have a game to discuss for Saturday when Kentucky and Kansas Square are off on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.
The Jayhawks are riding a modest 5-game win streak into this weekend’s battle with a ranked opponent, and they just got past another program in the top-25 with their win over Texas Tech last Monday night right here at the Fieldhouse.
The win improved the Jayhawks record to 10 – 0 at home officially, and the line setters like their chances to get past the Cats as 5-point favorites at home.
The Wildcats recovered from their loss to #1 Auburn with an overtime win against Mississippi State last time out, 82 – 74. Kentucky has only found wins in 2 from their 5 true road games this season
Kentucky Wildcats
The status of Daimion Collins has him questionable to go in this contest, as Cats fans know he came out of the Miss State game in the first minute and never returned to the court. It looks like he is a no-go from what I can see in reading news about the practice on Thursday as he, Washington, and Toppin all were non-participants.
So, Tyty Washington, who is the Cats’ second leading points-getter averaging 13.6 a night, Jacob Toppin who finds his way to 6 PPG, and Mr. Collins are all less than 100%. Even if the three of them get back out there right away, how long can they go and what contributions will they be able to make to help this team for 40 minutes… IN A BIG FUCKING GAME!!
Oh, make no mistake that scouts will either be in the building or in front of a TV to catch this affair, even more so to see how Kentucky responds should they be without this trio for any length of time.
Regardless, you should definitely keep an eye out during pre-game to check on the status of all 3 of those dudes.
Oscar Tshiebwe will certainly need to have a large effort to keep Kentucky in this game all night. Tshiebwe leads this team averaging 16.3 PPG but that other stat, man. Does that say 15.2 rebounds a game? I mean, talk about a stupid number, and that qualifies as ridiculous as it gets… In an amazing way if you will.
This Cats offense is putting 82.3 points a game and that is good for 9th in scoring throughout college hoops. Efficiently, this program drops 49.7% of their shots from the floor and that ranks them 5th in the nation in shooting percentage.
Kansas Jayhawks
I got to call the last Kansas game so I know plenty about them right now from the eye test. Oh, if you haven’t heard yet this team just wins at Allen Fieldhouse and this is nothing new around Lawrence. Coming to this place has been no easy task for any program for what feels like forever really.
By the same token, there are still some concerns for me when it comes to the scoring ability of DaJuan Harris. Listen, I get he is more of a provider for his teammates, but he missed some big shots going only 2 for 10 from the field coming away with 4 points in a double-overtime effort.
We saw a lot of Remy Martin running the floor against the Red Raiders than he usually does, but he too only scored 4 points in 22 minutes. The Jayhawks bench only found 16 of the 94 points for the Hawks but there is this guy, see. He wears #30 and his game IS OUTRAGEOUS!
Hello, 37 points! Hello, victory! While putting this team on his back at times and doing it so smoothly. I am sorry, but if you haven’t seen Ochai kill it this year? Tune in at 6 p.m ET to catch a dude who can ball his brains out! How many dudes have hit 7 three-pointers this season? Shit man, how many dudes have ever hit 7 damn shots from behind the arc even with some double-overtime action? The dude has game on his game!
The 50 team rebounds against Tech surely aided the win and #33 in the middle is a man inside as well. Mr. McCormack has size, agility and he needs to have a bigger game than he did last time out to be honest. If McCormack only scores 13 tonight with 5 boards? It might be a long night because I think he has a bigger game in him and this is about as big as it gets with Kentucky in town.
