The Hawkeyes come into the ACC/Big Ten challenge off to a hot 6-0 start to the season. That’s been impressive since the team was moving on from All-American Luka Garza who is off to the pros, but at the same time the quality of opponents has been pretty poor.
Virginia is in the top 25, rebounding from a couple of early season losses with four straight wins. That includes handing Providence their first loss of the season and winning the Legends Classic in New Jersey last Tuesday. UVA is still a +1.5 home underdog on Monday.
Iowa Hawkeyes
Iowa has been fun to watch so far this season, led by a couple of twin brothers in Keegan and Kris Murray. Keegan Murray has been on an absolute tear, going for at least 23 points in all six games and leading the country with a 25.7 ppg average.
Keegan Murray is also pretty solid on the glass averaging 8.8 rebounds/game. He had 27 points and 21 rebounds in a big win over North Carolina Central earlier in the season. Kris Murray is second on the team with a 12.8 scoring average, and is also a good rebounder with 6.8 per game.
Iowa looks to be extremely talented, because in addition to the electric twin sophomores, they also have a couple of experienced veterans in coach Fran McCaffrey’s son Patrick, as well as Jordan Bohannon who is playing his 6th season with the Hawkeyes.
The major concern facing a Hawkeyes wager is that this is the first time they are traveling all season, and they’ve only beat up weak competition. Iowa has been at least a -19.5 favorite in all six games this season.
Virginia Cavaliers
Unlike Iowa, Virginia has faced some pretty solid opposition so far on this young season. They lost by 20 at #12 Houston earlier this year and also topped Georgia and Providence to win the Legends Classic at the Prudential Center.
Some balance in scoring at the top has fueled the Cavaliers. Jayden Gardner had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the win over Providence, his second double-double in the last four games. Armaan Franklin also has a couple of 20+ point games on the year as well.
Virginia’s calling card really is their defense, which will get a test on Monday against the balanced Hawkeyes attack. UVA is allowing only 53.6 points/game which is the 4th fewest in the country. At the same time, Iowa leads the nation putting in 97.2 points/game.

That being said, the Hawkeyes might just be really good. The Murray twins could be a version of the Mobley brothers that led USC to so much success last year. Then you’ve got a 6th year Senior at the point which is a good formula.
