A great Big Ten offense is hitting the road to take on a great Big Ten defense in this one, as Luka Garza and the Hawkeyes are going into West Lafayette to take on Trevion Williams and the Boilermakers.
I love Big Ten basketball.
Iowa Hawkeyes
Luka Garza is the best player in the Big Ten right now. Heck, he might be the best player in the nation right now.

The man is averaging 23 points and 10 boards on 55% shooting from the field and 38% shooting from three. He’s powered the Iowa team to a 16-6 record, the #17 spot in the AP Top 25, and KenPom’s 4th-ranked adjusted offense.
Since January 10th, the Hawkeyes are 6-1 SU and 4-3 ATS. Here are Luka’s game logs since then.
-Jan. 10 vs. Maryland: 35 mins, 21 pts, 13 boards, 7-17 2pt, 1-4 3pt, 4-6 FT
-Jan. 14 @ Northwestern: 24 mins, 27 pts, 3 boards, 8-11 2pt, 2-3 3pt, 5-6 FT
-Jan. 17 vs. Michigan: 33 mins, 33 pts, 7 boards, 8-15 2pt, 2-3 3pt, 11-13 FT
-Jan. 22 vs. Rutgers: 35 mins, 28 pts, 13 boards, 9-13 2pt, 2-4 3pt, 4-7 FT
-Jan. 27 vs. Wisconsin: 37 mins, 21 pts, 18 boards (!!!), 6-15 2pt, 0-2 3pt, 9-13 FT
-Jan. 30 @ Maryland: 24 mins, 21 pts, 4 boards, 7-14 2pt, 2-5 3pt, 1-2 FT
-Feb. 2 vs. Illinois: 33 mins, 25 pts, 10 boards, 5-7 2pt, 4-9 3pt, 3-5 FT
Averages during that stretch? 25/10 on 51/43/71 splits. Very good.
Iowa’s only a game back of the Big Ten lead. However, it’s probably important to point out some areas where they struggle.
For instance… Iowa’s failed to cover in three of their last four. Opponents are shooting 50% from inside the arc against them this year. They are giving up more than 70 points a game, which falls outside the top-200 in the nation, and their DRtg of 99.1 is 186th in the country.
Purdue Boilermakers
Purdue is having such an average year, both in-conference and out-of-conference. And, they’re only 3-5 SU in their last eight.
If I was a Boilermaker fan, i’m not not worried right now. Unlike previous years, they are horrendous offensively. Their effective FG% of 47.6 is 256th in the country, they are only shooting 46.3% from 2pt range which is 289th in the country, and their FTA/FGA of 25.1% is 331st in the country.
I.e., they aren’t making any of their shots and they aren’t getting to the line. They’re really bad in two of the game’s most important aspects. Probably why they’re only averaging 67.2 points/game, which is 288th in the country.
Where they are good, however, is defensively. They are 16th in the country in KenPom adjusted defense and their 91.7 DRtg is top-50 in the nation. Specifically, their perimeter defense is spectacular, as teams are only shooting 28.7% from three against them this season (13th in the country).
All-in-all, they only give up 60 points/game, which is good for 11th in the country.
Probably also worth noting: The Boilermakers play at one of the slowest paces in the nation, as they’re 343rd in KenPom adjusted tempo. They play slow and they don’t make many shots.
CBB Betting Trends:
- PUR are 36-15 ATS in their last 51 Wednesday games
- PUR are 17-8-1 ATS in their last 26 home games
- IOWA are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 road games
- IOWA are 1-9 SU in their last 10 games playing on the road against PUR
Free Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Purdue Boilermakers NCAAB Prediction: Home team, better defense.
Ya, Luka Garza is insane. Ya, that Iowa offense will probably win a game or two in the tournament. Ya, the Hawkeyes are good.
They also haven’t covered in three of their last four road games and have just O.K. guard play. Additionally, as I wrote earlier, it’s not like their defense is any better than average, and I would say they actually have some decent sized holes on that end of the court.
When a high-powered offense goes on the road against a really good defense, I almost always take the home side. It’s also interesting to note that Iowa’s road trends are pretty weak and they are just 1-9 in their last 10 games in Mackey Arena.
At the minimum, I think Purdue covers if your book is showing them as a home dog. But I think they might just win the damn game. Take the Boilermakers. Go Boilermakers.
