Thursday college hoops has an inner conference BIG 10 showdown in the works between the Iowa Hawkeyes and Michigan Wolverines. These two teams are both tournament quality and have been tested all year as they’ve been competing in the stacked BIG 10 conference.
This is a top 10 matchup and there are currently 4 BIG10 teams in the top 10 rankings which is a testament to the depth of the conference.
Iowa (17-6, 11-5 BIG10) will make the trip north to pay a visit to Michigan (16-1, 11-1 BIG 10) and look to give them their first loss at home. This game will be a big test for the Hawkeyes, given their three losses to ranked opponents thus far. While the Big Ten features some of the top teams in the NCAA, the once 3rd-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes have proven that they have the talent to compete with the best.
If their high-powered offense comes to play, they could be a legitimate threat to the Michigan Wolverines on Thursday. Michigan will be playing in their second consecutive top 10 matchup after winning on Sunday against border state rivals the #4 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.
If Michigan wants to solidify a #1 seed in March Madness a win here would most certainly lock one up.
Iowa Hawkeyes
Iowa looked to be the top team in the stacked BIG10 conference earlier in the year but stumbled within the last month and picked up 4 conference losses dropping them down to 4th in the standings. A recent string of positive health and a weak schedule has the Hawkeyes back on track with 4 straight conference wins and once again in the top 10 national rankings.
This game will be a huge test for the Hawkeyes as they are just 1-3 in ranked matchups this year and if they have any hope of making it far this year in the upcoming March Madness they will need to be able to beat quality teams.
Luke Garza is having another great season after making a surprise return to college after winning the Wooden Award a year ago. The 6’11” center is once again a frontrunner as he is averaging an NCAA-leading 24.5 points per game on an incredible 56% shooting while grabbing 8.5 boards. In his last two games, he averaged 26.5 points and 9.5 rebounds.
Garza is followed in production by junior Joe Wieskamp who is averaging 15.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, and a team best 1.1 steals per game.
The foundation of this Iowa team is their deep range shooting as they are a staggering 40.3% on 3PT this year, best in the BIG10.
Michigan Wolverines
Michigan has been on a roll all season and has surprised some their elite play which now has them all the way up to #3 in the country. The Wolverines are at the top of the BIG10 at 11-1 with 7 of those wins coming by a double digit margin. Their lone loss came over a month ago on January 16th to the Minnesota Golden Gophers as they were sloppy from the start and fell on the road 57-75.
The Wolverines will be tested on Thursday with possibly their toughest challenge to date and will look to continue their unbeaten streak on their home court.
Facing potential back to back player of the year Luke Garza, the Wolverines will be tested to contain the big man inside. There is potentially no better option to do so then 7’1″, Hunter Dickinson.
The freshman stands taller than nearly everyone he matches up against, but his size is just a part of his arsenal. Dickinson is making his impact felt on a nightly basis, averaging a team-high 15 points and 7.8 rebounds per game
CBB Betting Trends:

- Iowa UNDERS are 5-0 in last 5 games
Free Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines NCAAB Prediction:
The Michigan Wolverines have taken down one competitor after another on their journey to the top of the Big Ten. The Iowa Hawkeyes will need to bring every bit of offense they have if they are going to pull off a road upset.
With just one loss in their record and still undrafted at home the Wolverines have put together one of the best seasons in college hoops. Their sharpshooting guards and sheer size in the paint make the Michigan Wolverines the favorites in this matchup. This game will be close and I expect the spread to reflect that but for now I’ll take Michigan to win straight up.
