The game of the night Friday comes in the form of a highly-talented Big Ten battle, as the Iowa Hawkeyes will travel to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini in the only ranked college basketball matchup Friday.
Iowa Hawkeyes
The Hawkeyes were riding a five game winning streak into this past weekend but were suddenly halted by the Indiana Hoosiers at home in a surprise upset. It was an uncharacteristic game for the top-ranked offense in the country as the Hawkeyes shot just 21.7 percent from downtown.
Coming into that game, Iowa was the second best scoring offense in the country behind only Gonzaga. The Hawkeyes still average over 90 points per game largely thanks to their dominant center Luka Garza.
Garza has been the best player in the country this season. The 6-foot-11 center is averaging 26.9 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game while shooting 61 percent from the floor and an unfathomable 46.2 from deep as a big man.
Garza has not done it alone. C.J. Frederick, Jordan Bohannon and Joe Wieskamp are all shooting greater than 37 percent from distance. As a team, the Hawkeyes are one of the top five teams in the country in terms of taking care of the ball and shoot 38.4 percent from deep as a team.
Illinois Fighting Illini
Illinois snapped a short two-game losing streak with a convincing victory over Penn State, 79-65. Illinois is a strong, balanced offensive team like Iowa and can score efficient from anywhere on the floor.
Illinois is much better than their five losses would say. As expected, the duo of Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn has been electric this season. The guard-center combo is averaging just under 40 points per game to go along with 17 rebounds a contest.
The one area Illinois could exploit Iowa is from the 3-point line. The Hawkeyes are outside the top 200 in the country in 3-point defense and the Fighting Illini are eighth in the country in 3-point percentage.
Kofi Cockburn posted yet another double-double in the win over Penn State. The sophomore center logged 21 points and 12 rebounds and will need another performance like that to match Garza. He drew 10 fouls in his last game and will look to get Garza in foul trouble early.
