Gonzaga missed its scheduled game with Baylor earlier this month, which would have been a #1 vs. #2 matchup.
It will, however, at least seemingly, take part in the next-best thing: a #1 vs. #3 with the fearsome Iowa Hawkeyes out of the Big Ten.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
That tilt with Baylor was postponed because of positive tests for the novel coronavirus known as Covid-19.
The Zags haven’t played since they beat a very good West Virginia team on December 2. In fact, it just practiced with the full roster for the first time earlier this week.
That will be no excuse for Head Coach Mark Few and his team of international student-athletes.
The 87 points scored against West Virginia represented a season-low for Gonzaga, which dropped 102 on Kansas in the opener and 90 on Auburn the day after.
Forward Drew Timme played a little bit as a freshman on last year’s team, which was destined for a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
This season, however, he is the team’s leading scorer at over 23 points per game. Timme stands 6’10” and has a powerful inside game that he can expand all the way out to the perimeter.
Corey Kispert, another forward, doesn’t measure up to Timme in size but can really shoot the ball and score off the dribble. He is averaging over 22 points per contests thus far.
Jalen Suggs, a 6’4″ guard, was Few’s prized freshman recruit in the Class of 2020. He comes into this season in the top-10 nationally and is so far averaging over 13 points per game, having started each one.
As usual, Gonzaga is one of the most steady, balanced and consistent rosters in the land. The Bulldogs have talent inside and out with a blend of youth and experience.
Iowa Hawkeyes
Iowa, unlike Gonzaga, has not missed a beat on its schedule so far this season.
Like Gonzaga, however, it comes into this game undefeated but with twice as many victories.
The Hawkeyes have been blowing their opponents out. They toppled North Carolina by 13 points on December 8. Otherwise, a 28-point victory over Iowa State is the smallest margin of victory they have.
Senior forward Luka Garza (29.2 points per game, 9.0 rebounds) is the star everyone knows. He can post up and step back beyond the three-point line but his leadership has been especially impressive in his senior season.
Iowa surrounds its big man in the middle with formidable talent, however. Junior Joe Wieskamp shoots 50% from three, as does sophomore CJ Frederick.
Senior point guard Jordan Bohannon is dishing out more than five assists per game so far this season. He’s just another wily senior that will make this team such a tough out come March.
So for as good as Garza is, he’s well-insulated with talent all over the roster.

Free Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. Iowa Hawkeyes NCAAB Prediction: Iowa.
To me, it’s a coin flip as to which is the best team.
I give Iowa the edge here strictly because of the schedule. You can’t completely replicate game reps and the Hawkeyes have simply had more of them in the last few weeks.
So look for Iowa to start faster and perhaps even finish stronger in what should be a ferociously-paced basketball game with a total you aren’t likely to see again for some time in college basketball.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Iowa +3.5
