The NCAA Tournament continues Sunday as #1 Gonzaga will look to avoid having their perfect season ended by #5 Creighton in a West Region Sweet Sixteen matchup.
Creighton narrowly escaped an upset by the #12 UCSB Gauchos in the first round 63-62. Christian Bishop knocked down 2 free throws with seconds remaining to sneak into the next round. They advanced to play the #13 Ohio Bobcats and defeated them 72-58 courtesy of a 15 point first half advantage. Marcus Zegarowski led the way with a game high 20 points.
Gonzaga breezed through their first game but were tested by Oklahoma in the round of 32. The Bulldogs were eventually able to pull away for a 87-71 victory but had to work for it. Drew Timme had an outstanding performance scoring game highs in points (30) and rebounds (13) for a big time double double.
The winner will advance to face off against either #6 USC or #7 Oregon with a spot in the Final Four on the line.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Gonzaga is unquestionably the best team in the tournament and has been the best team all year. The Bulldogs beat Norfolk State by 43 points and Oklahoma by 16 in the first two rounds.
Their average margin of victory this season is 23.6 points and they lead the nation with an average of 92.1 points scored per game. They’re also 1st in field-goal percentage, 3rd in assists per game and 8th in free throws made per game.
1st team All-American Corey Kispert returned to Gonzaga this year and appears to have been the right decision. He is leading the #1 team in the country with 19.2 points per game and is shooting an insane 45.8% from 3 point range. Drew Timme is another tremendous player and averages 18.8 points and 7.3 rebounds. Freshman All-American Jalen Suggs has done a great job at point for the Bulldogs and averages 14.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists (team best), and 2.0 steals (team best).
Creighton Bluejays
Creighton faced a lot of question marks heading into the tournament and they didn’t show anything in the first round that could silence the doubters. They looked as vulnerable as ever in their first round matchup and were only able to scrap to a 63-62 victory over the # 12-ranked Gauchos.
The Bluejays looked much better in the round of 32 and never trailed against Ohio. It is surprisingly the programs first Sweet Sixteen appearance after countless years of highly ranked teams and NBA caliber players. If they want to make it any further though they’ll need everyone playing at their best against #1 overall seed Gonzaga.
It will be on point guard Marcus Zegarowski to lead the Bluejays just like he did in the previous round. The junior guard is the teams heart and soul and is averaging a team best 15.6 points and 4.5 assists.
