The defending Big East Tournament champions find themselves in a lot of trouble after taking ten straight losses to open conference play. The Hoyas loss three straight games at home last week, and they’ve yet to record a win away from DC this season
Freshman guard Aminu Mohammed continues to be one of the few bright spots for Patrick Ewing’s team. He scored 20 points against a tough San Diego State team, 23 in the win over Syracuse, and he leads the team in scoring (13.6) and rebounding (7.7).
Citadel transfer Kaiden Rice has been one of the best marksmen in college basketball for three seasons, and he hit a career-high 10 three pointers against UMBC, scoring 34 points along the way. Rice is third on the team with 12.5 ppg.
Dante Harris has looked solid running the offense this year after playing 30 minutes per game as a freshman. The 6’0 guard is averaging a well-rounded 11.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg, and a team-leading 4.3 apg.
Hometown guard Donald Carey brings even more experience to the lineup, and he’s posting an identical line of 13.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg, and 3.2 apg.
DePaul Blue Demons
DePaul jumped out to a 9-1 start after handling a manageable non-conference slate well, with wins over Louisville and Rutgers standing out. Big East play handed them five straight losses and brought the Blue Demons back to life, but they were able to pull off a road victory over Xavier in their last time out.
The absence of hometown stud Javon Freeman-Liberty has really altered the season. The 6’4 guard’s efforts have kept the Blue Demons afloat, and he led the Big East in scoring at 21.3 ppg prior to going down.
David Jones has enjoyed a bigger role in year two thus far. The 6’6 forward has been reliable offensively and he’s grown into a defensive menace. Jones scored 33 points and grabbed 14 boards in the win over Louisville, and he scored 24 points and swiped five steals in the win over Seton Hall last time out.
Jones is second on the team in scoring (14.2), and he leads them with 7.3 rpg. Minnesota transfer Brandon Johnson has meshed in well with his new team, and he’s third in both scoring (10.7) and rebounding (7.1)
Oregon transfer Jalen Terry has taken on a bigger role in Freeman-Liberty’s absence, and he scored a career-high 28 points in the win over Seton Hall.
