The DePaul Blue Demons will travel north and take on the Providence Friars this Saturday evening. The Friars won the first meeting in Chicago, 70-53.
Providence is favored to win by ten here at home.
DePaul Blue Demons
DePaul jumped out to a 9-1 start after handling a manageable non-conference slate well, with wins over Louisville and Rutgers standing out. Big East play handed them five straight losses and brought the Blue Demons back to life, but they’ve jumped back over .500 with back-to-back wins over Xavier and Georgetown.
The absence of hometown stud Javon Freeman-Liberty has really altered the season. The 6’4 guard’s efforts have kept the Blue Demons afloat, and he led the Big East in scoring at 21.3 ppg prior to going down.
David Jones had a huge game against Georgetown. The 6’6 forward recorded the first triple double in school history (22/14/10), and he’s taken a big step in Freeman-Liberty’s absence. Jones is scoring 14.5 ppg and leading DePaul in rebounding (7.6).
Minnesota transfer Brandon Johnson has come in and been a workhouse, leading the team in minutes while ranking third in both scoring (10.7) and rebounding (7.1).
Nick Ongenda brings even more size to the lineup, and the 6’11 junior is coming off of a season-high 16 points in the win over Georgetown.
Providence Friars
Providence jumped out to a dominant 13-1 start that included wins over Wisconsin and Texas Tech, before being flat lined by Marquette on the road. The Friars got back to their winning ways, and they coming into this one winners of seven straight.
Ed Cooley’s team has won with their annual physical approach, scoring just over 70 ppg, but only allowing 63.2 ppg.
Nate Watson is the leader and the soul of this Providence team. The fifth senior has been around for awhile, polishing his game and gaining experience a long the way. He was a big factor in the bounce back victory over St. John’s, posting a 22/11 line.
Watson leads the team in scoring (14.1), while grabbing 5.7 rpg.
Jared Bynum has stepped up big time this season. The 5’10 junior reminds Friars fans of former flashy point guard, and he scored a career-high 32 points in their road win over Georgetown last time out. Bynum is third on the team in scoring (10.9), while leading Providence in assists (4.1).
Al Durham’s arrival from Indiana has been huge. The 6’4 guard has come in and been a reliable option offensively, and he scored a season-high 22 points in the road win over Xavier. Durham is scoring 13.3 ppg and dishing 3.2 apg. .
Noah Horchler and Justin Minaya surround Watson up front, with the former leading the team in rebounding (8.8).
CBB Betting Trends:
- Providence is 12-3 ATS in their last 15 home Big East games.
- DePaul is 6-10 ATS in their last 15 road Big East games.
- Under is 4-1 in the Friars last 5 home games.
Free DePaul Blue Demons vs. Providence Friars NCAAB Prediction: Providence to Cover
The margin for this Big East battle definitely feels like kind of low.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Providence -9.5
I don’t mind trusting a national championship contender to beat a team without their best player at home by ten. DePaul is one of the few teams in the conference that can match up with Providence physically, but the absence of Javon Freeman-Liberty may be too much to overcome here. The Blue Demons will likely struggle offensively here, leading to a good Saturday night for the Friars, who have one of the best defenses in the country.
Take Providence’s spread for this Big East matchup.
