Creighton Bluejays
After starting off the season well, it has been just the opposite for Creighton of late, as they have dropped 4 games in a row. Now, they get the challenge of facing a tough Arizona State team at a neutral site.
In those four losses, it is not as if the Bluejays have lost to “nobody” teams. The Nebraska loss is frustrating, but dropping to teams like BYU, Arizona, and Texas are not what I would call bad losses. Still, they need to get back on track in a big way Monday night.
Not only do they have to get back into the win column, but they need to get their most talented and impactful player, Ryan Kalkbrenner, back on the floor and ready to contribute.
Missing a guy with his size, strength, scoring ability, and rim protection is far from ideal. Sure, other guys have to do a better job of stepping up in his absence, but it simply is not the same with him not out there. As of now, there is no official word on his return to action.
Before Creighton gets into their brutal conference schedule, they are going to have one more out-of-conference test against a very confident Sun Devils team that is playing quite well.
Something that has been pretty evident in their skid is the lack of defensive production. Arizona and BYU really had their way offensively with them by attacking and exposing their weaknesses, which is just something that cannot continue as the rest of the year goes on. Regardless of who they have on the court, the necessary adjustments need to be made or Gregg McDermott’s team is not going to have the success they envisioned heading in the year.
At only 10 games into the season, they can certainly turn it around and start playing better. Of course, there is always the possibility that they spiral out of control and never truly right the ship.
With or without Kalkbrenner in this game and beyond, someone that needs to step up even more is Ryan Nembhard. The sophomore has been solid this season and if he is able to take his game to an even higher level, I would expect the Jays to be a more consistent threat on a nightly basis.
There are other role players that are important for this crew as well, but the success of this team is based on team defense and the Kalkbrenner-Nembhard Duo. When those two are locked in and playing efficient basketball, Creighton will rarely be an easy out for anyone.
Arizona State Sun Devils
Unlike their opponent, Arizona State has been playing very well and they take a 7-game winning streak into this battle with Creighton.
Their only blemish on the season so far came back in November when they lost by a point to Texas Southern. So far, they have played a mixture of tune-up games and decent teams but have certainly not played anyone that is great.
Despite Creighton really struggling, they are still a big-time test for Arizona State. A win over them would be something very impressive for this program.
There might be other teams in the Pac-12 that are getting more attention on a national level than these guys, but I do feel this squad is a legitimate threat and could make some serious noise this season.
I am certainly curious to see how they fare against a top-25 team here and also later in the season when facing teams like Arizona and UCLA.
In their two conference games of the 2022-2023 season, they won close ones against Stanford and Colorado. Those teams are certainly not elite, but a team will always take victories over conference foes.
So far, there is not one player that has stood out from the rest on offense. Three players are averaging over 12 points per game——-DJ Horne, Marcus Bagley, and Frankie Collins. The aforementioned Collins leads the team in assists with just over 5 a game. Note: Bagley has stepped away from the team and has appeared in just 2 games.
Defensively, I have mostly liked what I have seen from them, but it is important to remember the level of competition they have faced. They are a worthy unit that shows a lot of the signs of being a good defense, but I do have to see it against better teams before I get a true answer.

I see this as a game that turns out to be very close in the end. If either team won by a wide margin, I would be pretty surprised.
Overall, Creighton has a solid defense, but one area that is not a strength of theirs is creating turnovers. That will make it tough for them to stop an offense like ASU.
Mainly out of desperation, it would not surprise me if the Jays do pull off the win, but the points are too many for me to lay with them.
In a game that might come down to the final seconds, I like the Sun Devils getting the points.
