Fresh off their first loss in conference play, the Boise State Broncos will be out for revenge Friday night when they take on the Colorado State Rams.
These two squads currently sit in the top three of the Mountain West standings. Boise State is still in first despite their last loss, but Colorado State now only sits a game behind the top of the conference.
Colorado State Rams
Colorado State is red hot and riding high coming off their best win and defensive performance of the season. The Rams have won seven straight games and controlled the game Wednesday from the opening tip.
The Rams have dropped just three games this year, and they were all to formidable opponents. Two of those losses were in conference to San Diego State and Utah State.
While their defense has been lights out, the Rams have been feeling it from 3-point land as well. The Rams are hitting 39.1 percent of their threes and shot 8 for 20 from deep Wednesday.
Given that Colorado State is not a great rebounding team, it was surprising to see them dominate that category Wednesday. Regardless, this is still a team that shoots and defends the 3-point line very well.
David Roddy, a sophomore guard, leads the way for the Rams with 16 PPG and 9.4 RPG. Roddy had a career night Wednesday, posting 27 points and 15 rebounds. Isaiah Stevens also produces 15 PPG to go along with a team-leading 6.5 APG.
Boise State Broncos
Boise State had a 13-game winning streak snapped in their last matchup. Prior to Wednesday, the Broncos had not lost since their season opener back on November 27 against Houston.
Wednesday’s contest was Boise’s worst offensive game of the season by far. The Broncos shot just 5 of 23 from deep, got blown out on the glass, and just couldn’t find the net from anywhere on the floor.
Part of this could be attributed to a very good Colorado State defense. The Rams out rebounded the Broncos 40-24 Wednesday and currently own the 49th best defense in the country.
Boise State’s offense has done a good job getting to the basket and drawing fouls this year. The Broncos also have the 24th best turnover rate in the country and shoot 76.1 percent from the line as a team.
Derrick Alston Jr. is having another great season for the Broncos. The senior guard leads the team with 17 points per game. Marcus Shaver Jr. and Agu Kigab are both pitching in 13 PPG for the Broncos as well.
