The Cleveland State Vikings make the trip down south to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys for a Monday tilt at Gallagher. The forecast calls for 70 degrees in Stillwater and that suits the Vikings just fine this time of year considering it will be freezing tonight in Cleveland, of course.
The Vikes have reeled off 6 straight wins since losing their opening pair of games in 2021, and they are coming off a 10-point win over Wright State last time out. The Cleveland State offense has kicked into gear averaging 77.7 PPG during this 6-game win streak.
The Cowboys are heavily favored over the VIkes on Monday night although they have taken losses in their last 2 outings and need to regain their confidence. Oklahoma State has been playing well on the defensive side of the ball thus far as they rank 15th in the nation holding teams to a 37.3% shooting clip.
Cleveland State Vikings
The Vikes certainly want to build on their appearance in the big dance last season and Coach Gates has this team headed there again this year. At 6 – 2, this team is about to embark on a 5-game road trip with some tough competition along the way.
We know this because Duke is on deck for this team and they finish their non-conference schedule on the road against Kent State. This Vikes program will start conference play with 2 more games on the road before returning home to resume conference play so this will be a big stretch that will test this team’s togetherness.
We already know there is a lot of expectation on a team with more seniors than you can shake a hoop at. This will be the season that an NCAA Tournament win could come and it better be because this team will lose a lot to graduation.
Hodge and Patton may be the guys leading the team in scoring but this team is so deep it really is just a matter of who feels it on any given night. We see Coach Gates playing 10 dudes with no concern about a drop-off because of all the upperclassmen leadership throughout this roster.
Jayson Woodrich is one of the Sophomores getting experience and he came through in a big way off the bench in the win over Wright State last time out. Woodrich came in and he was one of two dudes that put up double-digits off the bench. They far and away outscored the Wright State subs and this will be something we expect to see all season long for the Vikes.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Oklahoma State may be the team favored to win big on Monday but make no mistake that this will be a tightly contested game. The Cowboys are in no way overlooking this team because the Vikings are not just some scrub team on the non-conference schedule.
Losses to Wichita State and Xavier was a bit of surprise being that this Cowboys team was favored to beat both of those programs as well. So, covering spreads is one thing but even winning the damn game is another.
Being upset against those two outfits doesn’t show too much concern even if the line setters think they were the better team. Remember, that shit means absolutely nothing to anyone on the court because it’s just about wins and losses and nothing more than that.
Avery Anderson III is the only guy on this team that is averaging double-digits as he puts up 11.1 PPG and is putting up a nice 37% from distance. Anderson really isn’t even doing as well as he did last year as a sophomore but yet he is doing enough this year to lead the team in scoring and a few other categories. The 26 points against Xavier were impressive though despite the loss to the Musketeers.
This team is deep too but the depth they provide is not so much on offense as it is on the defensive side of the ball. The Sooners only allow 62.9 points a game and they will hope to slow down
