The BYU Cougars come roaring into Santa Clara riding a modest 3-game win streak while having won 7 of their last 8 games as well. Despite the ugly loss to Gonzaga before this steak started, the Cougars are averaging 78 PPG over their last 4 outings and are hoping to improve on their 17 – 4 record thus far.
The Broncos are coming off a 4-point win over San Diego last time out although it took an overtime period to decide the victory, 78 – 74 over the Toreros. The Broncos were on the verge of losing a third straight game after setbacks against Gonzaga and St. Mary’s.
BYU Cougars
The Cougars had an easy time taking out Portland last time out, 78 – 65, and they are favored to go on the road and find a victory again tonight in Santa Clara. Looking to build on their 3-game streak of wins coming into tonight’s affair, the Cougars’ offense is shooting well and expected to head to Pacific this weekend with another W on the ledger which would give this program their 18th win of the year.
BYU ranks 127th only averaging 74 PPG, but obviously, that has come up recently with the scores we have seen from this team of late. Coach Mark Pope did a great job reinvigorating life into his kids after that ugly outing against Gonzaga that left this team with their 4th loss of the year. Giving up 110 points to one of the best programs in the country sure left a bad taste in the mouths of these Cougars, but they have rebounded well.
The Cougars’ defense has also been a strong contributor to helping this team find wins this year, and the rankings tell the story. BYU is ranked 17th in the nation guarding the 3-ball holding opponents to 28.5% from behind the arc. The Cougars defense is only allowing teams to shoot 40.1% from the floor which is good for 46th in the country.
Fousseyni Traore is just a freshman. Yeah, listen, the reason this team is so good on defense is because of his presence around the glass combined with his length as he certainly has a nose for the ball. Traore is averaging 8 boards a game and he has taken in 8 or more boards in half of his appearances.
The offensive side of the ball features Alex Barcello and Tejon Lucas as they are 1 – 2 in the depth chart averaging 16.7 and 10.4 PPG resp. Make no mistake, however, that this program has depth and you can find scorers throughout this Cougars’ roster.
Santa Clara Broncos
The Broncos are certainly having a decent campaign, but it seems that when they run into a quality team things start to get questioned. This program The early wins over Stanford and Nevada aren’t so impressive now that we see how those two teams are playing this season.
The Broncos were even favored by 8 over San Diego last time out and they barely escaped with an OT win after getting manhandled by both Gonzaga and the Gaels as I mentioned above.
Now, this team isn’t even favored at home against another quality team that might just come into the Leavey Center with an attitude while leaving with a W in their pockets.
As impressive as this team can be at times, the eye test still doesn’t tell me that we can invest in this team as a home dog.
The offense can certainly hold its own, as you see the rankings showing a program that sits 21st in the nation shooting 48.5% from the floor as a unit. In addition, the Broncos are ranked 31st shooting 37.6% from behind the arc so we might see ourselves a good, old-fashioned shootout tonight in Santa Clara.
The Broncos have four players averaging double-digits a game this season and Jalen Williams is a stud among studs. Williams finds his way to 18.3 PPG and grabs 4 boards a night to go along with the rest of the stats he stuffs! Seriously, his line in the boxscore every night has a crooked number everywhere because the dude can do it all.
Now, let’s throw in Mr. Justice and his buddy Mr. Vrankic who both are putting up 14 points per contest always expected to be big contributors to the scoreboard.

WIf 150 is supposed to scare me well, you’re going to have to do a little better than that. This is a race to 80 and the first one there might just land this win. I see an 81 – 78 type of game taking place here and closer to 160 than 150 IMO. So, play it accordingly.
