Two West Coast Conference teams go head-to-head Thursday night as the BYU Cougars travel to Stockton, California, to face the Pacific Tigers.
BYU’s last game was on February 8 when they fell short 92-81 against the #1 Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Cougars had two games postponed last week due to COVID-19. Pacific lost in their last game Saturday against LMU, 80-76.
These teams have already met once this season, with BYU emerging victorious in double overtime back on January 30.
BYU Cougars
Despite their last loss, the Cougars still find themselves 6-2 in WCC play. BYU is second in their conference and 15-5 overall. The Cougars tried to make a comeback against Gonzaga, but couldn’t handle the Bulldogs explosive offense. Alex Barcello led the team with 21 points and the Cougars shot 48.1 percent as a team.
BYU is a very effective offensive team. The Cougars led the country in the 3-point shooting last season and have continued to put up great numbers in 2021. The Cougars are putting up 78.8 PPG this season, which puts them 44th in the nation in scoring. BYU is an excellent rebounding team as well, ranking 18th in rebounds a game.
Alex Barcello has put together another impressive season for the Cougars. The senior guard is averaging 15.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists a game. Brandon Averette and Purdue transfer Matt Haarms each average in double figures as well.
BYU shoots 48.1 percent from the field as a team and 35.9 percent from deep.. The Cougars make 8.7 3-pointers a game and shoot 71.8 at the free throw line.
Pacific Tigers
Pacific has been struggling of late. The Tigers have lost five of their last six games and haven’t been the same team since coming off a COVID shutdown. To be fair, Pacific has had to play Gonzaga twice during this span. The Tigers blew a 14 point second half lead in their last game against LMU. The Tigers shot 52.5 percent from the floor but allowed LMU to shoot 55 percent.
The Tigers lone win during their last six games was against the last place team in the conference in Portland. While the Tigers haven’t been winning, they have been doing a good job of covering at home.
Pacific is 3-5 in conference play, good for seventh in the WCC. Pacific averages 70.5 PPG, which is just inside the top 200 in the nation. Damon Stoudemire’s team has struggled shooting the ball. The Tigers shoot just 30.7 percent from deep and 63.8 percent from the free throw line.
Defensively, the Tigers are 99th in efficiency, per Bart Torvik. They have struggled to defend the 3-pointer, allowing teams to shoot over 36 percent from deep against them. The Tigers are a good rebounding and shot blocking team, but must improve on the perimeter against the Cougars.
Daniss Jenkins is one of three players averaging in double figures and leads the team with 12.9 points a night. Jeremiah Bailey is second with 12.3 PPG while Broc Finsteun chips in 10.4 points.
