The Butler Bulldogs will look to avoid the season sweep when they travel to Cincinnati and take on the Xavier Musketeers this Wednesday for a Big East matchup. Xavier went into Indianapolis and picked up the 87-72 last month.
Xavier will be heavily favored to win at home here.
Butler Bulldogs
Butler came out of the non-conference slate 7-4 and began Big East play with a home victory over DePaul. The Bulldogs responded to a four-game losing streak with two home victories over Creighton and Georgetown.
Bryce Golden remains a key cog in the Butler for a third straight season. The senior from Richmond, VA has scored 17 points or more in four of his last five games, and he leads the team in scoring with 9.1 ppg, while grabbing 3.9 rpg.
Aaron Thompson is one of the most experienced guards in the country. The fifth-year starter scored a season-high 25 points against Xavier, and he’s scoring 7.5 ppg, while dishing out a team-high 4.1 apg
100% or not, Bryce Nye’s presence is more than enough. The fifth-year senior does everything you’d love to see from a college basketball player, and he double-doubled in win over Georgetown. Nze averaging 8.2 ppg and 5.9 rpg.
Jayden Taylor’s freshman year has brought optimism to Indianapolis. The 6’4 guard has cracked the starting lineup, and he’s scoring 8.6 ppg.
Guards Chuck Harris and Jair Bolden, last year’s leading scorers, remain in the fold, but they’ve struggled to produce since the start of Big East play.
Bo Hodges and Simas Lukosius make the team even deeper, with the latter hitting multiples threes in three of the past four games.
Xavier Musketeers
Xavier notched ten wins during non-conference play, including notable victories over Oklahoma State, and in-state foes Ohio State and Cincinnati. The Musketeers avoid a third straight conference loss after an impressive comeback road victory over Creighton last time out.
Paul Scruggs has been a mainstay in Cincinnati, and he leads one of the deepest teams in the nation for a fifth straight season. The 6’5 guard returned after setting the school single season assists record, and he’s averaging 11.7 ppg and a team-leading 4.4 apg.
Colby Jones and Nate Johnson join him in the backcourt. Johnson, a 6’4 senior, is third on the team in scoring (10.9), while Jones, a 6’6 guard, has been a stud on the glass. Jones double-doubled in the win over Oklahoma State, and he’s leading Xavier in rebounding (8.3), while scoring 10.7 ppg.
Jack Nunge was a huge pickup from Iowa over the summer. The 7′ big has come in and taken on a larger role early, posting a monster 31/15 line in the bad blood win over Cincinnati. Nunge is up to a team-lead 12.7 ppg and 7.2 rpg.
Andrew Kunkel has been an excellent spark plug, and he’s allowed the team to go small for extensive periods of time. The 6’5 guard scored 25 in the first matchup against Butler and the Belmont transfer is scoring 8.4 ppg.
Zach Freemantle had a bigger role last season, but Nunge’s arrival has toned things down a bit for him. Freemantle still remains a starter and a key piece to what the Musketeers do, and he’s coming off of a double-double in the win over Creighton.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Butler is 4-8 ATS in their last 12 road games.
- Xavier are 8-4 ATS in their last 12 home games.
- Under is 5-2 in Bulldogs last last seven games.
Free Butler Bulldogs vs. Xavier Musketeers NCAAB Prediction: Butler to Cover
Big East basketball is a beautiful thing once it’s in full swing.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Xavier –
Xavier’s been a bit shaky since their 15-point win over Butler, and if the margin is heavy, it’d be hard to trust them to cover here. Butler has won three of their last four games, and their team is visibly growing and getting deeper. If they want to make a run this Spring, it needs to start now, so I’ll spot them the points in here as they should continue to play hard.
Take Butler’s spread for this Big East battle, and view the under.
