The Butler Bulldogs and the St. John’s Red Storm will meet at the Carnesecca Arena this Friday afternoon. St. John’s won the first meeting earlier this month 75-72.
St. John’s may open as the favorites to win at home here.
Butler Bulldogs
Butler came out of the non-conference slate 7-4 and began Big East play with a home victory over DePaul. The Bulldogs have since struggled with inconsistency, and their only winners of four of their last ten games. Butler did bless loyal bettors with an upset home win over Marquette, 85-79.
Bryce Golden (9.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg) remains a key cog in the Butler for a third straight season. The senior from Richmond, VA came up big in the home victory over Maruqtte last time out, scoring a season-high 22 points.
Aaron Thompson is one of the most experienced guards in the country. The fifth-year starter scored a season-high 25 points against Xavier, and he’s scoring 7.8 ppg, while dishing out a team-high 4.1 apg
A healthy Bryce Nze has really given Butler a boost in the middle. The fifth-year senior does everything you’d love to see from a college basketball player, and he double-doubled in win over Georgetown. Nze averaging 8.3 ppg and 6.1 rpg.
Guards Chuck Harris and Jair Bolden, last year’s leading scorers, remain in the fold, but the latter has struggled to produce since the start of Big East play. Harris leads the team in scoring (10.5), and he scored 15 points in the win over Marquette.
Bo Hodges and Simas Lukosius make the team even deeper, with the latter hitting multiples threes in three of the past four games. Hodges double-doubled in the win over Marquette, and he leads the team in rebounding (6.4), while scoring 8.8 ppg.
St. John’s Red Storm
St. John’s wasn’t able to build much of a resume through non-conference play, with only wins over in-state foes Fordham and Monmouth standing out. The Red Storm started conference play 2-4, and they enter this on the heels of a home loss to Villanova, 75-69.
The Red Storm are one of the highest scoring teams in the nation at 79.3 ppg, good for 14th in the country.
Julian Champagnie leads the charge again after a breakthrough 2020 season. The 6’8 swingman scored a season-high 34 points and grabbed a career-best 16 boards in the win over DePaul, and he’s makes the Red Storm a threat to win every night. Champagnie is averaging a team-leading 18.5 ppg and a team-leading 6.6 rpg.
Posh Alexander compliments him well from the lead guard spot. The 6′ sophomore is quietly one of the best point guards in the country, and he plays an efficient, well-rounded, two-way game. Alexander is second on the team in scoring 14.9 ppg, while grabbing 4.7 rpg, and dishing out a team-leading 5.2 apg.
The NY-born guard also leads the Big East in steals (2.6). The pairing of Alexander and Dylan Addae-Wusu (9.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.2 apg) has given St. John’s strong backcourt play on both sides of the ball.
Transfer imports Montez Mathis (Rutgers) and Aaron Wheeler (Purdue) start up front and the latter is coming off a career-high 31 points against Villanova.
CBB Betting Trends:
- BUT is 6-4 ATS in their last 10 road games.
- SJU is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games.
- Over is 5-2 in Red Storm’s last 7 games.

4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Butler +8.5
The statuses of Bryce Nze and Bo Hodges are huge for this one. If they play, I absolutely love this pick. If this miss the game, I do believe the Bulldogs still keep things close. Nothing surprises at this point from this team.
