Bradley Braves
The Missouri Valley has been making at an impression at the annual Big Dance for years.
Last year, Bradley was its representative and it pushed Michigan State — an eventual Final Four team — all the way to the last quarter of the game before falling short but covering with ease.

This season, the Braves return their fine Head Coach Brian Wardle, who has consecutive twenty-win seasons under his belt at Bradley but still hasn’t finished any better than .500 in conference play, and their three best players from last year’s team.
Darrell Brown, Nate Kennell and Elijah Childs, two seniors and a junior, respectively, combine to average better than forty points per game, which sounds good but not great.
But Bradley shares the ball well and has 222 assists coming into this game, which is better than nearly 300 teams in Division I. Its next three scorers after the three names mentioned above all get at least seven points per game.
Bradley also plays a slow, grind-it-out style; forty points is already about two-thirds of what most opponents hope to score against it. The Braves rank in the top-40 by allowing opponents to shoot just 38.6 percent from the field.
By Sports-Reference’s Simple Rating System (SRS), the only team in the Missouri Valley better than Bradley (which ranks 101st in the country) is Northern Iowa (74).
The Panthers just handed Bradley its first conference loss, 69–64, in Cedar Falls, over the weekend. UNI sophomore sensation AJ Green scored a career-high thirty-five points in what was an MVC classic with two teams in the sixties and just eight turnovers apiece.
Evansville Purple Aces
Evansville has the big win over Kentucky at Rupp Arena but it ranks dead-last in the conference (208 in the SRS) and has lost its first two games (at Missouri State, vs Valparaiso).
Head Coach Walter McCarty has not been with the team during any of the conference action. He has been placed on administrative leave after a “troubling report” indicated McCarty may have violated Title IX in some way, which means he may have discriminated against females on campus. The details have been few and far between since the news broke.
McCarty only won five games in the MVC a year ago in his first season on the job but had some more firepower this season with the return of leading scorer KJ Riley, who has been surpassed this season by sophomore Deandre Williams.
A 6’9” forward from Houston, Williams is averaging seventeen points per game this season after sitting out last year after the NCAA ruled him ineligible.
A pair of transfers that also sat out last season, Artur Labinowicz (via Coastal Carolina) and Sam Cunliffe (via Kansas), are also averaging double-figures.
Long-time assistant Bennie Seltzer has taken over for McCarty while the issue is resolved. It wouldn’t be surprising if Seltzer, who was the head coach at Samford for two seasons from 2012-2014, stayed where he is for the rest of the season, however.
