Boston College Eagles
Boston College picked up two conference wins on the road in the primarily non-conference portion of its schedule against South Florida and Notre Dame.

Now conference season begins and the Eagles won’t have any games to ease into things. They start right away at Duke, the conference’s perennial favorite.
Obviously, Ky Bowman is gone from last year’s team that won just five games in ACC play. Bowman is with the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.
BC also lost Wynston Tabbs, a promising freshman a season ago, to a knee injury. Tabbs, who averaged nearly fourteen points and three assists per game as a diaper dandy, will miss the entire season after undergoing surgery on his left knee.
The Eagles added Derryck Thornton, a 6’3″ guard originally from Los Angeles, who began his career at Duke, sat out a year to transfer closer to home at USC and then finally wound up at Boston College.
At 13.8 points per game, Thornton is the team’s leading scorer so far this season. He also adds over three rebounds and assists per game as a physical guard.
The Cameron Crazies, however many of them are not on campus during the festive season, might have it out for Thornton, who started twenty games in 2015/16 when Duke finished fifth in the ACC with an 11–7 mark.
Duke Blue Devils
Last time out Duke beat Brown by twenty-five, 75–50, which wasn’t quite enough to cover the spread.
This handicapper had the Blue Devils by thirty and so leaned toward the eventual losing side but it’s a reminder of the danger of playing big favorites.
Vernon Carey Jr. had nineteen point as the only starter in double-figures. Wendell Moore Jr. and Alex O’Connell were both in double-figures off the bench.
Tre Jones missed his second game in a row with a foot strain suffered back at the start of the month against Virginia Tech. Given Duke’s light schedule — the Blue Devils had two weeks off before playing Wofford and another week-plus until the Brown matchup — it was a little surprising Jones didn’t go against the Bears.
Then again, Duke can play the long game, especially in a spot like vs Brown. It’s ACC schedule starts out relatively light, too.
The Devils have already won at Virginia Tech and they open the permanent conference slate with BC, @Miami, @Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and @Clemson before hosting Louisville on January 18.
Including the Brown game, Duke plays eight times over the next three weeks. It will, however, be Duke the superior side in just about all of them.
In fact, it looks like a down year for the ACC as a whole. If Duke has Jones rested and healthy to open things up, it will be tough to beat.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Under is 7-2 in BC last 9 overall.
- BC are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
- BC are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games.
- Over is 6-2 in DUKE last 8 overall.
- Under is 6-2 in DUKE last 8 vs. Atlantic Coast.
- DUKE are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 Tue. games.
Free Boston College Eagles vs. Duke Blue Devils NCAAB Prediction: Duke opens it up.
BC hasn’t lost in four weeks but it has lost by healthy margins to four teams less talented and well-coached than Duke already.
In a three-game stretch it lost by double-digits at Richmond and at home to Northwestern and Saint Louis. It gave up 100 points in another fifteen-point home loss to Belmont.
So Duke will be a healthy double-digit favorite but as the number creeps up, just beware. This handicapper wouldn’t recommend getting too excited about a number in the teens.
