Boise State Broncos
Head Coach Leon Rice is in his tenth season with Boise State. He’s finished under .500 just twice but has just qualified for just two NCAA Tournaments in his tenure and lost in the First Four both times.
He stems from Mark Few’s coaching tree, whom he coached under for twelve seasons at Gonzaga.

Both of Boise State’s conference losses this season (the Broncos are 3–2) came on the road: way back at the start of December, at New Mexico, by two and a week ago, at Nevada, this time by seventeen.
But the Broncos recovered in time to hand UNLV its first conference defeat earlier this week, 73–66, at home.
Derrick Alston, a 6’8” junior guard who leads the team with twenty points per game, played all forty minutes and scored twenty-six points with ten rebounds. He also leads the team in assists (3.1 per game) and is second in rebounds (5.7 per game).
Boise State’s defense has allowed opponents to shoot over fifty-two percent from the field this season (300th in NCAA Division I), which looks especially bad when you consider the first seven players in its rotation are all juniors and seniors.
San Diego State Aztecs
With five conference wins, San Diego State is already halfway through its first run through the conference. Three other schools are 3–1, perhaps because none of them have played SDSU yet.
So the Aztecs have an undefeated record, a top-10 ranking and a strong hold on the Mountain West Conference just five games into the schedule. Complacency could be SDSU’s primary concern through January and into February.
The roster is healthy with the exception of 6’10 sophomore forward Nathan Mensah, who has missed the last three games with an illness.
Born in Ghana, Mensah protects the rim for SDSU’s exceptional defense and leads the team in blocks per game (1.7) and rebounding average (6.8 per game). He’s one of six players averaging over twenty minutes per game. There isn’t any word on his availability for this game.
The Aztecs’ defense is top-10 in the country in opponent’s field goal percentage (.363), three-point percentage (.262) and points per game (56.5).
Malachi Flynn leads the team in scoring at better than sixteen points per game. He’s a sturdy guard (6’2” and 180 lbs) who is listed as a junior but sat out last season after transferring from Washington State.
He also leads the team with 4.9 assists per game. SDSU is in the top-30, nationally, in total team assists. Great defense and a balanced, unselfish offense is how it has managed to stay undefeated this long.
