The Belmont Bruins fell just a bit short on their quest to reach the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, so a trip to Nashville is in store to face the Vanderbilt Commodores on Tuesday night to start the NIT.
The Bruins had expectations of being one of the 68-teams competing for a national title but this invitation also might give Belmont the best chance to go deep into a tournament instead. Belmont might have to win 3 road games to end up in New York for the NIT Final Four although an upset or two could see them back home as soon as this weekend. As a 5 seed in their bracket, Belmont will face Vandy today and with a win, they will play the victor of the Dayton vs. Toledo affair being played on the Flyer’s floor tomorrow night.
And then there is Vanderbilt. When you can tell me what the hell Vandy did to deserve being in the post-season, I will maybe understand the reasoning. I think there are at least 15 other programs in this country that would leave the Commodores in the dust as a 17 – 16 program really didn’t do anything to impress any of us this season.
Belmont Bruins
Offense much? The Bruins offense was in fifth gear most of the season and I expect more of the same to come to open the NIT. Belmont ranks 7th in the nation splashing 49.2% of their shots from the floor and the 79.4 PPG puts the Bruins at 22nd in the nation in scoring.
The Bruins fell a bit short of the OVC tournament final game losing to Morehead State in the semifinals, 53 – 51. The offense was certainly not the call of the day in a moment where any of it could have come in handy. Nick Muszynski had his shot blocked in the final second of the game to leave the Bruins with the loss, as he ended the game with 14 points and 4 boards.
Leading scorer Ben Sheppard came away with 19 points but the Bruins as a team were only able to convert 2 of their 12 3-point shot attempts. Bench points? Yeah, stop it. You know by now that bench production and NCAA basketball have nothing in common this season. The Bruins got a free throw from Matt Shanks and there is your output from the subs in the loss to Morehead State last time out.
That was so ugly that I just threw up a little thinking about it again. So, rebounding from that ugly loss can only be done with a decent shooting night in Nashville. The line setters don’t exactly like the Bruins’ chances to show up tonight leaving them as dogs by a few points on the road.
Luckily, the Vandy defense won’t be much of a resistance tonight because they simply do not have the ability to slow anyone down. As is the case more often than not, it will just be a matter of if the shots are falling because Belmont will certainly be putting up plenty of balls towards the rim tonight.
Vanderbilt Commodores
The post-season? Wait… Playoffs? Playoffs? Talkin’ bout, playoffs? LoL, I know, and it baffles me why the Commodores are playing post-season basketball at all. The win over Alabama in the SEC Tournament did that much to influence the voting committee to let Vandy in the NIT?
Yeah, sorry, I am not even bout to get into the how and why that happened because I don’t get it. This team might have found a couple of decent wins over the likes of LSU and Texas A&M down the stretch, and Vandy only managed an 8 – 12 record to close out the season including the 2 wins on the SEC Tournament.
Now, let’s take the two wins over Georgia out of that mix because they were a full-blown disaster and that really means this program found 6 wins to even make sense of as the season came to a close.
So, a reward for that effort is a home game in the NIT against a pissed-off Belmont team? Yeah, listen, there are live dogs and there are weak favs and this is a situation featuring both of those. The Commodores have Scottie Pippen Jr. to rely on and he can certainly ball with the best of them. Pippen has had a fantastic season leading this program with an average of over 20 PPG but the help surrounding him? Well, there simply isn’t enough to surmise that this team can beat Belmont tonight, even at home.
The Commodores’ offense ranks 275th in the nation only hitting 42.3% of their shots from the floor this year, and making free throws is almost a coin-flip situation. Vandy only converts 69.2% of their shots from the charity stripe leaving this program ranked 260th from the line.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Bruins are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games as an underdog.
- Bruins are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games as a road underdog.
- Under is 4-0 in Bruins’ last 4 games as an underdog.
- Over is 11-3 in Commodores last 14 overall.
Free Belmont Bruins vs. Vanderbilt Commodores NCAAB Betting Prediction:
I don’t have a ton of faith in these two defenses to hold that under, but I do expect Belmont to show up and make a game of it. Late fouls and such could certainly take an under and spoil it so just in case they do topple my forecast of 72 – 69 let’s just think dog.
Feel free to move the line to 5+ if you’re a teaser kind of bettor and get at least a handful of points for -125 if you have the ability to do so. I will stay with the 4.5 for now and expect the dog to hunt!
