A pair of Sun Belt Conference programs in the top-4 of the standings square off on Thursday night when the Red Wolves and Trojans take the Trojan Arena court. The Trojans are in the second position of the table due to their 7 – 3 conference record as everyone is chasing the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
Troy is 7 – 3 from their 10 conference games and the Trojans are riding a modest 3-game win streak as they look to build on their 8 – 1 record at home. The Trojans’ defense might not stand out on paper but the eye test surely tells us that when this team has a plan to shut you down they can do just that. The Trojans have held 6 of their opponents under 59 points this year and one of those came in a win against conference leaders Appalachian State who were held to 53 on January 8.
Arkansas State Red Wolves
The Red Wolves are 6 – 3 in Sun Belt play and that has them tied for 3rd place in the conference standings with Texas State who are both also 15 – 6 overall. Arkansas State has also been trending to the over this season a bit taking 11 of their 18 totals above the number.
Having said that, of course, the Under is 5 – 0 in their last 5 games so as the season gets closer to wrapping up the regular season we are seeing strong defensive numbers. The Red Wolves allow 67.4 PPG which has them decently ranked at 137th in the nation.
The Red Wolves have been alternating wins and losses over their last 5 outings but they’ve held 4 of those 5 opponents under 61 points over this stretch of games. Last time out against Louisiana, the Red Wolves committed 21 fouls and their leading scorer, Norchad Omier, fouled out with only 8 points. Omier’s season average fell to 16.9 with that effort.
Marquis Eaton hopefully hit the practice floor hard over these past couple of days. Eaton made 8 free throws and came away with 10 points against Louisiana as he missed 10 of his 11 attempts from the floor and went 0 for 2 from behind the arc.
Neither one of these programs shoot well from behind the arc so don’t expect a lot of made 3s tonight from the Red Wolves or Trojans in this tilt.
The Trojans will only have 5 games remaining on their regular-season schedule after this matchup with the Red Wolves and one of those foes will be a second meeting with Appalachian State. As I mentioned, Troy took the first meeting with the conference leaders, and a win tonight could surely put great emphasis on that affair. App State is 9 – 3 in Sun Belt play while both Arkansas State and Troy are in the chase right behind the Mountaineers.
Troy has used that defensive approach often and when they do this program is usually coming away with victories. It worked in their favor again last time out against Georgia Southern as the Trojans took a comfy 61 – 52 win over the Eagles on the road which followed up their 67 – 63 winning effort the game before against GA State also on the road.
Home cookin’ has been tasty for this Trojans program having only suffered a single defeat on this court all season long. Ironically, the total has gone over the number 13 of their 20 games so you may think I sound crazy pumping up the Trojan D. I get it because this team can also find the net although the rankings don’t point to a wealth of success either this season.
The Trojans are only ranked 187th in the nation putting up 70.7 PPG and the 239th ranking for a team shooting 43.1% from the floor makes it tough to tout the offense up either but this team just plays together and they are fun to watch.
How about that effort from Duke Miles against the Eagles last time out? The 11 points he tallied weren’t all that special but 6 steals and 8 dimes to be a difference-maker were enough to make him the game’s MVP. Troy’s leading scorer Efe Odigie added 12 points which is pretty much what he has been doing all season. His average on the season is at 11.3 PPG and his 6 boards a night look pretty good too.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Red Wolves are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Thursday games.
- Trojans are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 Thursday games.
- Trojans are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
- Trojans are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games.
Free Arkansas State Red Wolves vs. Troy Trojans NCAAB Betting Prediction:
I trust Troy just a little bit more than I do the Red Wolves, but the line setters see it that way too so that is concerning. Regardless, a 3-point line isn’t all that much to ask and I do not see an upset coming tonight. I’ll call for a 68 – 62 home win for the Trojans.
