The Washington Wizards have underwhelmed so far throughout the 2016-17 campaign. In fact, most of the major storylines to come out of the young season are beyond just poor play on the court.
Bradley Beal and John Wall apparently don’t get along the way fans in D.C. would like to think they do. DeMarcus Cousins of the Sacramento Kings has openly stated that he and Wall have talked about playing with each other (not in Washington).
That, combined with a 6-10 record is hardly how the Wizards imagined the start of their season playing out, and it’s certainly not what head coach Scott Brooks imagined would be the focus as he makes his return to Chesapeake Energy Arena.
In terms of actual basketball, the Wizards don’t fall into the top 15 of scoring (21st), defense (17th), rebounding (21st) or assists (20th). The net margin on points per game is a negative 2.4 for this squad, but things haven’t been all bad as of late.
Entering this contest, Washington has won three of its last four, and four of its last six. That’s a strong improvement after starting the year just 2-8.
Against OKC, the Wizards will look to keep that momentum rolling. Unfortunately, there’s one player on the Thunder who has taken “rolling” to a whole new level.
Russell Westbrook is a man possessed. We all knew entering the year that he was going to have vengeance on his mind following the departure of Kevin Durant (to the super team Golden State Warriors, nonetheless), but this has been ridiculous so far.
Through 19 games, Westbrook is averaging a triple-double. That is not a typo.
He’s scoring 30.9 points per game while recording 11.3 assists and 10.3 rebounds. Question whether this is happening organically or intentionally all you want — there’s no arguing against this historical start to the year.
In terms of the other Thunder players…wait, nevermind — it really doesn’t matter.
If Westbrook is able to have a similar showing to his season-long numbers, OKC will be fine. The superstar point guard is averaging a triple-double in both wins and losses this season. The difference is three-point shooting.
In wins, Westbrook is shooting 37.7 percent from deep. In losses, that number drops to 31.3.
Keep an eye on Westbrook’s efficiency as a team-wide indicator of success in this one.
