Wednesday, December 14th, finds the Washington Wizards playing the Denver Nuggets in the first of two scheduled matches. The Wizards will host the second contest on March 22nd
The Wizards last played Monday losing 100-112 to the Nets while the Nuggets have been off since Saturday when they won 115-110 versus the Jazz.
Last season the clubs played twice with Denver sweeping the series The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 55 of their 96 matches
Washington Wizards
The year is different but the results are eerily mirror-like. Bradley Beal has struggled to stay healthy and remain on the court having appeared in 18 matches while missing 10.
As I warned early in the season when the Wiz were on a four-game win streak it’s commonplace for this team to start the season strongly and then fade or be mediocre the rest of the way.
And, they’re right on track. They got off to a 10-7 start but since then are 1-10 and on a current seven-game losing streak.
Rumors are swirling that Kyle Kuzma has requested a trade and to be fair, he’d be a hot property at the deadline if GM Tommy Sheppard was open to giving Kuzma his wish.
Odds are he’s more invested in shopping one of the youngsters who hasn’t fit with Beal and Kristaps Porzingis such as Deni Avdija or Rui Hachimura.
Kuzma is averaging 21.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists. Beal (22.9) and Kristaps Porzingis (22.6) are averaging more points but in terms of a value for production evaluation, Kuz is way ahead on that front.
Offensively, the Wizards score 110.4 points per game which ranked 23rd overall. Washington shoots 47.2% from the field and 34.2% from the perimeter ranking 14th and 19th respectively.
Defensively, the Wizards allow opponents to score 112.9 per game ranked 15th overall. As for opponent efficiency, the Wizards allow foes to shoot 45.9% from the field ranking seventh-best, and 37.4% from the perimeter ranking 27th.
Beal (hamstring), Porzingis (back), Monte Morris (groin) and Anthony Gill (heel) are all questionable whiel Rui Hachimura (ankle) is questionable is out.
Denver Nuggets
Nikola Jokic is averaging a double-double this season in his 23 appearances with 23.8 points and 10.1 rebounds as well as 9.1 assists and 1.2 steals.
He’s taking 14.4 shots and connecting at 62 percent efficiency from the field shooting 31.6 percent from the perimeter on 2.5 attempts and getting to the line 6.3 times per match connecting at an 80.1 percent efficiency.
Denver ranks 10th in scoring averaging 115.0 points per game and first for proficiency from the field: 50.3%, and also possesses the best perimeter percentage: 39.4%.
Defensively, they rank 18th for opponent scoring allowing 113.8 points per game, while foes shoot 48.8% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking 29th and 23rd overall.
Peyton Watson and Jack White are on G-League assignment. Michael Porter Jr. (heel) and Collin Gillespie (leg fracture) are out.

Denver has to be cautious about the trap game and underestimating the Wizards. Presumably, they learned that lesson with losses earlier this season to lower-tier teams.
The Nuggets, Pelicans, and Grizzlies were all chasing the Suns but it was the Pels who capitalized first, and subsequently, Memphis joined with both holding 18-9 records and a share atop the West’s ladder 1.5 games ahead of Denver.
The spotlight is on New Orleans, so the Nuggets can quietly go about their business and be ready to strike. The schedule is definitely in their favor with 16 of the next 21 games at home.
As poorly as the Wizards are playing the spread feels a bit too rich but keep an eye on updates to the injury report as both Beal and Porzingis missing would increase the odds of Denver winning by a larger margin. With the current uncertainty, I’ll take the points.
