Friday, January 7th the Utah Jazz and Toronto Raptors meet for the second and final time this season. Utah won the initial match 119-103 on November 18th.
Utah last played Wednesday beating the Nuggets 115-109 while Toronto played swept their back-to-back set on Tuesday/Wednesday versus the Spurs (129-104) and Bucks (117-111).
All-time the Jazz have the advantage of winning 30 of 50 matches and are on a current three-game win streak versus Toronto having swept them last season.
Utah Jazz
The player most associated with COVID and the NBA is Rudy Gobert whose initial positive test on March 2020, was the catalyst that led to the league suspending the season.
Flash forward just under 22 months later and Gobert has tested positive again. While the Jazz had avoided many players entering the health and safety protocols this could just be the signal they are about to get hit harder.
In their last game, the Jazz battled the undermanned Nuggets in a thriller with Bojan Bogdanovic leading the way via a double-double of 36 points and 13 rebounds although he struggled from deep (1 of 6).
Rudy Gay (18), Donovan Mitchell (17), Royce O’Neale (13), Jordan Clarkson (13), and Mike Conley (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
The Raptors will get a huge break with Gobert out as well as Mitchell (back), Bogdanovic (finger), Conley (knee), and Ingles (quarantine). In addition, Gay (heel), Hassan Whiteside (concussion), Clarkson (back), and O’Neale (shoulder) are questionable.
Toronto Raptors
In direct contrast to the majority of the league, the Raptors are finally close to 100 percent healthy with all but two players on the roster having spent time in protocols.
That’s equated to Nick Nurse finally having the starting unit he wants to experiment with that doesn’t include a typical center and a reserve group featuring either Pascal Siakam or Scottie Barnes running the point.
Nurse is taking positionless ball to a whole new level and so far they’ve benefitted with four wins in a row.
Siakam in particular is thriving with the fully healthy starting unit. In the four victories, he’s averaged 24 points, 12.5 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.8 steals while shooting 55.6 percent from deep albeit taking fewer attempts (2.3).
While Fred VanVleet has been the one orchestrating much of the Raptors’ success it was Siakam who led the comeback effort against the Bucks with Toronto holding Milwaukee to 11 points on 3 of 21 shooting in the third quarter after they scored 77 points in the first half.
Svi Mykhailiuk (quarantine) is upgraded to probable while Yuta Watanabe (COVID) is out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 6-4 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Raptors are 8-2 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Jazz
- The over/under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
Free Utah Jazz vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
With so many of their core either not playing or questionable it begs the question if the Jazz are worried their players will test positive coming into Canada and end up stuck north of the border while they quarantine.
Especially since many of the injuries were things listed over a week ago with those players having appeared since that initial posting. That question could get answered if they do participate on Saturday as they complete the back-to-back set in Indiana.
Regardless of whether the numerous Jazz players earmarked as questionable suit up with confirmation four of five Jazz starters are out this should be an easy victory for Toronto.
