Wednesday, December 23rd finds the Utah Jazz versus their Northwest division rivals the Portland Trail Blazers playing their first game of the 2020-21 season.
The Jazz holds the all-time record between the clubs with 104 wins in 192 meetings. Last season, the clubs played three times with the Jazz taking two out of three meetings.
Utah Jazz
With Ryan Smith taking over ownership of the Jazz he’s making swift moves to prove he’s willing to spend locking down both Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert to big deals.
Although the duo had their issues last season when Gobert tested positive for COVID-19 and Mitchell also contracted it presumably catching it from Gobert.
Although it could be argued Gobert and Clarkson’s deals were overpays the fact Smith is establishing a standard that he’ll go the extra mile to win won’t go unnoticed by the players.
Mike Conley is undergoing COVID-19 contract tracing but should be good to suit up on Wednesday. Less fortunate are Joe Ingles (illness), Shaquille Harrison (hand). Bojan Bogdanovic (wrist) who are all questionable to play.
Portland Trail Blazers
No one was more impressive in the Orlando bubble seeding games than Damian Lillard who made 40 foot 3-pointers look like he was shooting them from three feet from the bucket.
Unfortunately, the energy the Blazers had to use to get to the play-in tournament took a toll and Lillard’s knee injury forced the team to succumb to the eventual champions.
Last season the Blazers were mired by injury throughout and much of their issues arose based on a lack of depth. Neil Olshey addressed these issues with an aggressive offseason adding Robert Covington, Derrick Jones Jr., Enes Kanter, and Harry Giles.
RoCo, Jones, and Giles will all make the team better defensively while retaining Carmelo Anthony and Rodney Hood plus bringing back Kanter gives them offensive depth off the bench. I love the RoCo and Giles (who Olsehy got for a song) signing specifically.
This is the deepest team Dame has had since his rookie year. As he enters his prime the club isn’t getting the love in the deep West and could use the underdog rank to their advantage.
Look for Lillard to give Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo a run for their money as MVP and the Blazers to shock everyone by claiming a home court seed.
Hood benefitted from the long suspension and is projected to be back from his Achilles injury and in the lineup Wednesday. However, Anfernee Simons (hamstring), Nassir Little (personal), and Derrick Jones Jr. (back) are all questionable while Zach Collins (ankle) is out until next month.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Over is 10-3 in UTA last 13 overall
- The Jazz are 2-7 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Portland.
- Over is 17-6 in the last 23 meetings in Portland
Free Utah Jazz Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
While the Blazers haven’t looked great in the preseason losing games by large margins it hasn’t felt like Terry Stotts was fully showing his hand.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick:
The Jazz lost some of their defensive identity last season and while the Blazers have never been a great defensive club during Dame’s tenure something tells me this team (especially the starters) could be a full two-way effort club.
With that I like the Blazers to take the opener and send a message to the Jazz who most pundits predicted would finish ahead of them.
