Sunday, December 11th the Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic finish a baseball set in Orlando in the teams’ third meeting of four this season. Toronto won the initial December 3rd match 121-108 and Friday’s game went to the Magic 113-109.
Toronto will host the final meeting on February 14th. This is the third time these clubs are playing in the last nine days.
Last season, the squads played three times with Toronto taking two of the three contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 54 of their 97 matches
Toronto Raptors
So much for the closed-door meeting, the players had following poor performances versus the Pelicans and Nets. The Raptors came out of that seeming to understand the need to start games strong and immediately stepped up in both their matches against the Magic and Lakers.
Flash forward one week and they were right back to a lackluster opening quarter (and a terrible third quarter) that put them in a hole to a young hungry Magic team who could smell the win.
The loss wasted Pascal Siakam’s performance as he tried his best to pull out the win registering 36 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, a steal, and a block.
Scottie Barnes in particular was absent, not aggressive offensively but also MIA on the defensive end. Coach Nick Nurse’s face was as red as a beet and no doubt the film session will be fire on Saturday!
On offense, the Raptors score 111.3 points per game (19th) shooting 44.9% from the field (27th) and 32.6% from deep (26th).
Defensively, the Raptors allow 110.0 opponent points per game ranking (6th) while they shoot 48.5% (27th) from the field and 34.9% from deep (13th).
O.G. Anunoby (hip) is questionable while Otto Porter Jr. (toe dislocation), Juancho Hernangomez (ankle) and Precious Achiuwa (ankle) are out.
Orlando Magic
Franz Wagner may not have won Rookie of the Year but he sure sent a message to Barnes Friday and the Magic fans jumped on Twitter to troll the Raptors youngster too.
Wagner appeared unstoppable scoring 34 points on a highly efficient 12 of 15 adding five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Orlando rookie Paolo Banchero who struggled a week prior in Toronto was also effective delivering 23 points (8 of 11), six rebounds, four assists, and a block.
Offensively the Magic average 108.1 points per game ranking 29th overall. They shoot 46.8% from the field and 33.6% from the perimeter ranking 17th and 24th respectively.
Defensively, Orlando holds their opponents to 113.9 points per game ranking 19th. The Magic allow opponents to shoot 47.5% from the field ranking 21st and foes shoot 34.0% from the perimeter ranking sixth overall.
Jalen Suggs (ankle), Gary Harris (hamstring), Wendell Carter Jr. (foot), Chuma Okeke (knee), and Jonathan Isaac (knee) are all out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Magic are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight-up win.
- Toronto is 14-2 SU in their last 16 games against Orlando.
- Orlando is 2-9 SU in their last 11 games.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Orlando Magic NBA Prediction:
Its common knowledge Barnes (and VanVleet) are playing through injury but if Scottie can’t bring enough energy to defend (Wagner was his main assignment) then he needs to sit until he’s healthy enough to go.
Guaranteed, if Toronto loses to the Magic in consecutive games there will be a shakeup either in the rotation or via a trade. Meanwhile, the tanking Magic gained confidence having beaten the Clippers and Raptors back-to-back, and have the belief they can win.
I’m expecting a bounce-back game from Barnes who played his collegiate ball at Florida State and the Raptors to come out with force.
Although I’m picking the Raptors to cover it comes with the caveat that IF Anunoby can’t go then I suspect both the score and win margin will be lower so keep an eye on the final injury update.
