Friday, February 19th finds the Toronto Raptors and the Minnesota Timberwolves play for the second time in a week when the Wolves won 116-112.
The Raptors hold the all-time record between the clubs with 33 wins in 49 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice with Toronto winning both contests.
Toronto Raptors
The up and down season for the Raptors continues. Since January 14th the Raptors seemed to turn a corner winning five of six then lost three in a row (Pacers, Bucks, Kings).
They followed this schedule segment up with another 5-1 run then lost two in a row (Celtics, Wolves).
Once more they seem back on track taking both games against the Bucks. That’s big since only the Jazz and Lakers won at Fiserv Forum this season before the Raptors did it twice in a row.
However, the reason I bring up the schedule is the Raptors of 2020-21 have not carried over traits of former campaigns when they feasted in back-to-back sets. To this point, Toronto hasn’t won playing on consecutive games (0-4) this year.
That said, the Raptors again look to have rediscovered their chemistry. Part of the reason is Pascal Siakam is playing to his potential and OG Anunoby is back.
But, arguably a lineup tweak could be credited as Nick Nurse is going super small to start and using Aron Baynes with Chris Boucher simultaneously in a reserve lineup. Milwaukee struggled to adapt to the variance of small to big but we’ll see if it’s as effective on other opponents.
Despite missing Lowry (ankle/thumb) on Thursday the Raptors core all stepped up. Norman Powell (29 points) and Pascal Siakam (27 points, six rebounds, five assists, a steal, two blocks) continued their hot streak.
Fred VanVleet (17 points, five rebounds, eight assists, steal, block) and Anunoby (10 points, 7 rebounds) served up solid 2-way efforts.
Lowry is likely out Friday.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Wolves have a single win in their last seven games which just happened to be against tonight’s opponent. Since Karl-Anthony Towns returned his presence hasn’t equated to victories but they’ve been in virtually every game.
The most recent game required overtime to decide but the young Wolves couldn’t hold onto a late five-point lead in clutch time and fell to the Pacers in the extra frame.
KAT did his part registering a double-double of 30 points and 10 rebounds including a perfect night at the charity stripe (12 of 12) along with an assist, two steals, and two blocks.
Ricky Rubio also reached the double-double benchmark with 20 points and 13 assists. Malik Beasley was moved to the bench and responded with 31 points. Rookie Jaden McDaniels replaced him garnering his first career start and responded with 11 points.
Naz Reid chipped in 18 points and nine rebounds.
D’Angelo Russell (knee) is out until April while Jarrett Culver (ankle) is questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 7-3 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The Wolves are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
For the Raptors to confirm they’ve truly turned a corner they need to win on consecutive nights. And while the Wolves are the team with the rest advantage they are playing their third game in four nights.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Raptors ATS
Toronto needs to build upon the success in Milwaukee and use the motivation of coughing up the Sunday match to Minnesota. Look for Anunoby to make a difference especially if he’s tasked with defending Beasley.
