Monday, January 2nd, the Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers play in the second of three meetings between the clubs this season. Indy won the initial match 118-104 on November 12th. Toronto will host the final meeting on March 22nd.
The Raptors played Friday defeating the Suns 113-104 while the Pacers won a 131-130 nailbiter versus the Clippers on New Year’s Eve.
The Pacers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 53 wins in 100 meetings. Last season, the teams played four times with the Raptors victorious in three of the four contests.

Toronto Raptors
This season hasn’t gone remotely close to plan and while pundits keep suggesting Toronto should blow it up it is still a bit premature, especially considering the injuries they’ve dealt with.
Nick Nurse has used a league-leading 18 different starting lineups, hampering the ability to find any sense of continuity or flow. Part of that equation might get resolved today if Precious Achiuwa returns to the court after a 23-game absence due to an ankle injury.
Although Achiuwa isn’t a starter his presence nonetheless is vital to the Raptors’ schemes, particularly on defense. Without him, Nurse has had to rely on rookie Christian Koloko and vet Thad Young to man the paint with mixed results.
The other reason for patience is the parity in the league. Toronto is in a virtual tie with the 10th-place Bulls, a game back of Atlanta, 2.5 behind the Heat and Knicks while Indy is up 3.5 games.
One brief winning streak can vault any team up the ladder as the Heat just demonstrated by jumping from 12th up to seventh. And the tell-tell sign is the Raptors have a positive net differential while five teams above them are in the red (including the Pacers).
On offense, the Raptors score 111.3 points per game (24th) shooting 45.2% from the field (27th) and 32.8% from deep (29th). Defensively, the Raptors allow 111.2 opponent points per game ranking (9th) while shooting 49.0% (29th) from the field and 36.4% (20th).
Achiuwa is questionable. Otto Porter Jr. (foot) remains out.
Indiana Pacers
The Cinderella Pacers are my favorite NBA League Pass team this season. Rick Carlisle has this team buzzing offensively and recently are improving defensively.
Carlisle has so much youthful depth on this squad that he’s doing wholesale hockey lineup substitutions with each member contributing to the team’s success.
The Pacers average 115.4 points per game ranking eighth while shooting 46.3% from the field and 37.2% from the perimeter which ranks 22nd and ninth respectively.
Defensively, Indy allows 115.8 points which rank 21st while these opponents shoot 46.8% from the field and 36.7% from the perimeter ranking 13th and 25th.
Kendall Brown (tibia fracture), and Daniel Theis (knee) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Pacers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Raptors are 3-10 SU in their last 13 games on the road.
- The Pacers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games at home.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction:
For those wondering about OG Anunoby’s defensive impact (and why he’s very likely the other untouchable besides Barnes), consider Friday’s match. He was forced to sit due to foul trouble as Phoenix erased the deficit, momentarily taking the lead.
A minute after he checked into the fourth, Toronto upped their defensive intensity holding Phoenix scoreless for the final 4:44 to ink the victory.
Although there was a belief Indy would move Buddy Hield and/or Myles Turner they’re playing so well now with a youthful core already in place that there is a very strong argument to keep this crew intact.
Ultimately, both teams will monitor their progress until February 9th before making any major decisions or deals.
As for this match, it’s not a must-win for the Raptors although they’ll approach it that way, but I think Indy has too much firepower and net the victory.
