Friday, January 14th, finds the Toronto Raptors facing the Detroit Pistons for the second time this season. Detroit won the initial meeting on November 13th with a score of 127-121. The teams will play once more in Toronto on March 3rd.
Both teams last played on Tuesday with the Raptors battling the Suns to the wire but falling 99-95 while the Pistons got smoked 87-133.
Toronto Raptors
While the Raptors’ six-game win streak came to an end versus the Suns arguably it was Toronto’s best effort of the past seven. Some opined the win streak was fools gold because it included a watered-down Warriors/Jazz club and Bucks, LAC, Knicks missing Antetokounmpo/Paul George/Randle.
The Suns game proved the Raptors are legit especially because they were missing two starters (Gary Trent Jr., Scottie Barnes) while Phoenix was at full strength except for Cam Johnson.
With 4 seconds remaining it was a two-point match and could’ve gone either way. The Raptors’ length frustrated Phoenix as they forced 20 Suns turnovers and outrebounded them 47-39 including 22 offensive boards (to 10).
With Toronto up 79-73 at 8:45, Landry Shamet offered his oscar submission, and the refs’ bit. The result sent Siakam to the bench with his fifth foul (clean block) while Shamet took three free throws. Nurse had already successfully used his challenge on another “act” by Booker that was overturned.
The refs also ignored a clear Ayton foul on Anunoby with 14 seconds left that would’ve tied the game and changed how Monty Williams closed the game.
Devin Booker was so frustrated by Anunoby’s defense (4 of 13) he even complained about The Raptor resulting in the refs banishing the mascot into a timeout which of course blew up Twitter.
And while the bad call and no call contributed to momentum shifts ultimately it was 10 missed free throws and not converting on more of the offensive boards by Toronto that could’ve changed the outcome and a horrific 3-point shooting night.
Trent/Barnes absence had a palpable effect as Phoenix double/triple teamed VanVleet and Siakam. Still, it was one of the most entertaining games of this season and sent notice this Raptors team is closer to the recent performances now that they are almost fully healthy.
The core of Siakam (22 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, three steals), Fred VanVleet (21), OG Anunoby (26), and Chris Boucher (13 points, 16 rebounds) stood out.
Barnes (knee) and Trent (ankle) are both questionable for Friday.
Detroit Pistons
With only nine wins this season the Pistons have recently experienced an uptick in their performances winning four of the last seven matches. Two of the victories were against elite teams the Bucks and Jazz.
Part of the reason for their recent success is rookie Cade Cunningham has progressively felt more comfortable being the primary playmaker and scorer while Saddiq Bey has also taken a step in his growth.
Despite the improved production the Pistons remain at the bottom of the East’s ladder sitting just ahead of the Magic and currently reside in one of the coveted bottom three seeds that would give them a shot of winning the top draft pick for the second year in a row.
The loss to the Bulls showcased all the areas of the game the Pistons need to improve. They allowed Chicago to shoot 52.9 percent from the perimeter (18 of 34), lost the rebounding battle by 20 (41 to 61), as well as fast break (15 to 28) and paint scoring (46 to 52).
Detroit struggled to score versus Chicago with Josh Jackson (16), Bey (14), and Isaiah Stewart (11) being the only double-figure scorers versus Chicago.
Cory Joseph (knee) is questionable while Jeremy Grant (thumb), Frank Jackson (ankle), Isaiah Livers (foot), and Kelly Olynyk (knee) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Pistons are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head matches
- The Pistons are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Toronto Raptors vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Analysis:
Since Dwane Casey was fired by the Raptors his Pistons have owned the Raptors regardless of their lower-tier position. They swept Toronto last season and are on a current four-game win streak against Casey’s former team.
Toronto is due to end their losing streak against Detroit and will be intent on getting back into the win column especially with this being the start of a five-game road trip that features tough matches versus the Bucks, Heat, Mavericks, and Wizards.
