Friday, February 5th finds the Toronto Raptors playing the Brooklyn Nets for the first time this season.
The last time these teams met was in the Orlando bubble in the first round of the playoffs. The Raptors swept the series (a first for the franchise) and in the final game, the Raptors set an NBA record with their reserve unit scoring 100 points.
The clubs have both undergone significant roster changes since then with the Nets adding James Harden while Toronto lost both their big men Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol in free agency.
The Raptors hold the all-time record between the clubs with 56 wins in 41 meetings. Last season, the teams played four times with Toronto taking three of the four regular-season meetings.
Toronto Raptors
VanVleet had a relatively quiet night in the first game versus the Magic scoring just nine points. He made up for that in Orlando, registering a career and franchise-best 54 points.
Notably, the record was set on a highly efficient 17 of 23 from the field, 11 of 14 from deep, and 9 of 9 from the charity stripe.
In addition to the 54 points, VanVleet added three rebounds, two assists, three steals, and three blocks. His backcourt partner Kyle Lowry posted a triple-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, plus four steals.
Pascal Siakam added 12 points and eight assists while Norman Powell returned from injury to score 23 points.
OG Anunoby remains out with a calf strain and isn’t expected back until February 8th. Patrick McCaw had offseason knee surgery and is expected to make his debut sometime around February 6th.
Brooklyn Nets
The new Big 3 in Brooklyn are feasting offensively having led their team to score 147 and 146 points versus the Thunder and Wizards respectively this past is weekend although they only got one win for their efforts.
While there is no denying this group can score they’ve struggled to defend. In the 10 games since James Harden joined the team, the Nets are averaging 127 points offensively but allowing 124.1 points per game.
After their recent victory versus the Clippers, the Big 3 were reveling in their amazing defense in holding their opponent to 120 points!
They also put on a strong defensive effort versus the Heat (85 points) but Miami was missing Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro. In fact, aside from the Heat game and the 115 points Orlando scored, the other eight opponents have scored between 120 and 149 points.
The positive to take from this is the team will continue to work on their defensive schemes, likely look to add defensive-minded players at the trade deadline, and seem to up their effort versus the better teams.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Raptors are 9-1 in the teams last 10 meetings.
- Raptors are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these clubs
- The over/under is 5-5 in the last 10 contests between the clubs.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
Without OG Anuoby the Raptors lose their best option to guard Kevin Durant. They’ll need to get to the line and hope their reserve unit is a factor to get the upset.
