San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs bounced back from a loss to Houston in the first of two to split the mini series and get back over .500 on Friday night.
They only shot 40 percent but held the Rockets under 38. DeMar DeRozan didn’t have an efficient night but his 24 led the team. Most importantly, they won the turnover battle by ten.
Rookie Devin Vassell scored nine points in nearly 20 minutes of action. He’s averaging a modest five points per game and his percentage from two hasn’t been great.
Still, he’s ahead or at least at the same development stage that each of the three previous Spurs’ rookies were at.
Now DeJounte Murray, Lonnie Walker and Keldon Johnson are all starters. Vassell is on the same track, which may leave DeRozan expendable when his contract ends at the end of this season.
Portland Trail Blazers
Portland has quietly won five out of six, including Saturday’s 112–106 win over the Hawks.
Damian Lillard scored 36 with seven assists. Enes Kanter had 12 points and 15 rebounds as the starting center with Jusuf Nurkic out for the foreseeable future with a broken wrist.
Gary Trent and Carmelo Anthony, who have both been better this season than last, had double-digits off the bench.
Some of Anthony’s numbers are down, including points and rebounds but his three-point shooting has been better — fantastic even — and his turnovers are down. Those are two of the most important numbers to the Blazers.
Then there’s CJ McCollum, who has come out scorching. He’s upped his scoring average again, up to 26.7 points per game at the moment.
He isn’t doing it with greater volume, either. He’s been more efficient, though, shooting more threes, making more of them, and getting to the line more often.
He’s slashed his turnovers nearly in half, from 1.8 per game last season to 1.0 this year. He’s also upped his assists to a full five per game. What a player he is, truly championship caliber.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction: Portland stays hot.
This has potential to be a good matchup with some of those young San Antonio guards with a big task on their hands stopping the Blazers’ elite backcourt.
But Portland is hot and at home so I’m going to stay on the train. Back Portland up to four points.
