Friday, January 7th, finds the San Antonio Spurs facing the Philadelphia 76ers for the first time this season and will finish their season series in San Antonio on January 23rd.
Both teams last played on Wednesday with the 76ers defeating the Magic 116-106 while the Spurs beat the Celtics 99-97.
Last season, the squads played twice with the 76ers taking both contests. The Spurs hold the advantage all-time having won 58 times of the club’s 99 meetings.
San Antonio Spurs
With the Spurs on a seven-game road trip they finally broke through with a victory having lost the three prior matches. Getting back Dejounte Murray was clearly an advantage as his presence improves the Spurs capabilities on both sides of the hardwood.
In the win versus the Celtics, Murray came one rebound shy of a triple-double registering 22 points, 12 assists, nine rebounds, and three steals.
The trio of Derrick White (17), Devin Vassell (17), and Keldon Johnson (13) were the other Spurs to register double-digit scoring while Jakob Poeltl posted 14 rebounds.
The match marked Gregg Popovich’s 2,000th all with the same team and is a mark no other coach has accomplished in NBA history.
While the Spurs play with more of a team effort than some of their opponents who focus on a primary star like the 76ers will with Joel Embiid, getting Murray back was key.
While he was in protocols the Spurs lost four games and notched a single victory. Murray leads San Antonio with 18.0 points, 8.9 assists, and 2.0 steals while placing second in rebounds per game (8.4).
Unfortunately, the Spurs got rocked on Thursday with several players entering protocols including Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Derrick White and Thaddeus Young while Doug McDermott entered January 1st.
All five are expected to miss Friday’s match while Lonnie Walker and Devontae Cacok are questionable.
Zach Collins continues to rehab from offseason ankle surgery with no definitive return date.
COVID 19 took a toll on Joel Embiid forcing him to miss nine games but in the 16 games he’s played since returning he’s been every bit the MVP candidate and helped his squad battle to 11-5 in those matches.
During that period Embiid has registered 10 double-doubles and a triple-double averaging 29.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks.
He led the was for Philly versus the Magic with 31 points, five rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block. Four teammates joined him scoring in double-figures including Tobias Harris (22), Seth Curry (20), Furkan Korkmaz (20), and Andre Drummond (12).
Myles Powell returned from protocols Wednesday and the hope is Matisse Thybulle, Paul Reed, and Jaden Springer will return Friday although Tyrese Maxey is listed as out indefinitely.
Shake Milton (back) and Isaiah Joe (leg) are both questionable for Friday. Ben Simmons remains out under suspension.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
With the Spurs losing so many of their key contributors to health and safety protocols and even though Dejounte Murray is back they’ll be hard-pressed to compete in this match.
