San Antonio is home to Toronto the night before. This is their first back to back situation of the season.
Speaking of firsts, this is also the first home game of the season for New Orleans.
New Orleans is going to be one of the more interesting teams in the league this season. San Antonio is kind of a question mark too.
San Antonio Spurs
This is being written before the Spurs clash with the Raptors on Saturday night. Therefore we only have one game result to analyze so far.
A couple of things do stand out from the Spurs upset of the Grizzlies in their opener.
The first is that they basically played four guards around one big man. DeMar DeRozan is basically a power forward in this lineup and he played like one grabbing 9 rebounds.
Against the Grizzlies all five starters scored at least 16 points. Derrick White is probably going to be a part of that group but he is out. Keldon Johnson fills that spot for now.
If they can get the production they need from the starter the Spurs have a nice mix off the bench. Patty Mills and Rudy Gay are veterans who can be counted on.
Rookie Devin Vassell came off the bench too. He sunk in the draft and so far there is no compelling evidence that assessment was off.
I am curious to see how the Spurs play with this new style. They have the personnel for it.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans could not get a second win to start the season, falling to Miami in the Christmas Day tipoff game.
Against the Raptors the Pelicans got a little lucky. Toronto had lots of great three point looks and just couldn’t make them. Miami was much more accurate on Friday.
In looking at the two games one things that stands out is the push and pull between Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. Ingram led the way against Toronto in the win while Williamson was much more active in the loss against Miami. They combined for 60 points against the Heat but it might be worth monitoring what leads to winning for this group.
In the loss to Miami the backcourt took the day off. The combo of Lonzo Ball and Eric Bledsoe only scored 11 points. That puts a lot of scoring pressure on their young forwards.

I have faded the Pels in both their games this season, so so far I am 1-1. I think they are going to be a team to fade throughout the year as they will not be as good as we want them to be. Exciting, sure but I think there is going to be value most of the time going against them.
That said, this is not going to be one of those situations. San Antonio is just not going to be in a great spot navigating their first back to back of the year.
