Thursday, December 22nd, the San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Pelicans meet for the third of four scheduled matches this season. New Orleans will host again on March 21st. The Pelicans won the prior two matches on November 23rd (129-110) and December 2nd (117-99).
Both teams last played Monday with the Spurs beating the Rockets 124-105 while the Pelicans lost 119-128 to the Bucks.
The Spurs hold the all-time record having bested the Pelicans in 53 of their 75 meetings. Last season the squads played four times with San Antonio winning three of the four contests.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Wednesday evening, December 21st. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Thursday, December 22nd.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs are on a bit of an uptick having won four of their last six games with two of those victories coming against the Rockets. It’s a catch-22 because those wins vaulted them to 26th overall.
That’s important if the Spurs want to retain one of the coveted bottom three seeds because that earns teams the best shot at winning the NBA Draft Lottery.
Moreover, the Spurs have plenty more games against other lower-tier (tanking) teams ahead. Entering week 10 they’d played just three teams with less than 12 wins (now four after the Rockets match on Monday).
If the Spurs are serious about tanking they’re going to have to lose some of those matches or risk climbing up the ladder.
On offense, the Spurs average 110.3 points per game ranking 26th overall. San Antonio shoots 46.5 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from the perimeter both ranking 20th.
While the Spurs struggle to score the larger issue lies on the defensive side of the hardware with them ranking 30th in all three defensive categories allowing 119.5 opponent points per game 50.5% field goal percentage and 38.9% perimeter percentage.
Josh Richardson (personal), Romeo Langford (elbow), and Jakob Poeltl (knee) were upgraded to probable while Keldon Johnson (back) is doubtful for Thursday.
New Orleans Pelicans
After winning seven games in a row including the drama-filled baseball set versus the Suns, the Pelicans learned what it’s like to be the hunted club, losing the next four games.
Zion Williamson is averaging 25.2 points, 7.2 rebounds (2.1 offensive boards), 4.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
He’s shooting 60.3 percent from the field on 16.0 attempts, 33.3 percent from the perimeter on 0.7 attempts, and 71.3 percent from the charity stripe on 7.8 attempts per contest.
Offensively, the Pelicans rank third for scoring averaging 117.3 points per game while shooting 48.5% from the field and 36.7% from the perimeter ranking fifth and 10th respectively.
Defensively, the Pelicans allow opponents to score 112.5 points per game, ranking 14th. New Orleans holds their opponents to 46.4% from the field also ranking ninth and boasts the third-best perimeter ranking of 33.7%.
Larry Nance (Achilles soreness) is questionable, while Zion Williamson (quarantine), Brandon Ingram (toe), and E.J. Liddell (knee) are out. Dereon Seabron is on G League assignment.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Spurs are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games.
- The Pelicans are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against New Orleans.
- The Pelicans are 7-1 SU in their last 8 games at home.
Free San Antonio Spurs vs. New Orleans Pelicans NBA Prediction:
The Pelicans experienced the highest of highs and the rapid plummet to lows in less than 11 games and will enter this contest with a sense of desperation to end the losing streak.
They’ll have to accomplish that goal without Williamson or Ingram but in both prior victories versus San Antonio, they were missing at least one of their big three and still won by 19 and 18 points so I’m taking them to win and cover.
