Sunday, December 11th, the Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks play in the first of two scheduled meetings. Sacramento will host on March 9th.
Both teams last played Friday with the Kings beating the Cavaliers 106-95 while the Knicks defeated the Hornets 121-102.
All time the Kings have the advantage of winning 158 of the 306 matches versus the Knicks. Last season, the teams played twice with the Knicks winning both contests.
Sacramento Kings
On Friday, the Kings came out firing putting the Cavs in an early hole, and then bookended it by finishing strong in the final quarter. For a team that’s feasted offensively, the fact they held Cleveland to under 100 points showcased their ability to defend when they try on that end.
Sacramento held Cleveland scoreless down the stretch going 19-0 which prompted head coach Mike Brown to call the win his favorite of the season and implied it was a turning point for the club.
Domantas Sabonis had one of his most complete games offering a double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds along with six assists, three steals, and two blocks. Harrison Barnes (20), Kevin Huerter (19), and Keegan Murray (18) were the other double-figure contributors.
Offensively, the Kings are among the very best in the association with the second-best scoring output, averaging 118.8 points per game.
Similarly, they perform well in the proficiency areas ranking third-best for field goal percentage registering 49.4%, and are in the middle ranking 14th for perimeter percentage shooting 36.4% from deep.
Sacramento ranks 20th in opponent scoring allowing (115.1) points per game while foes shoot 48.1% from the field and 37.4% from the perimeter ranking 24th and 26th respectively.
De’Aaron Fox (foot), Keegan Murray (thumb) and Terence Davis (back) are questionable.
New York Knicks
With the victory on Friday, the Knicks extended their win streak to three in a row with the defense taking a step to another level during this stretch.
They held the Cavs to 81 points, the Hawks to 89, and the Hornets to 102. With teams regularly scoring 120 points per night that’s a major accomplishment to keep three teams’ offenses so low in consecutive games.
Jalen Bruson seems to be focusing more on distribution while Julius Randle and RJ Barrett are also contributing more offensively. In the win on Friday Randle led the way with 34 points and seven rebounds while Barrett offered 26 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Whether it’s a purposeful choice or not, it’s working and it’s notable Quentin Grimes’ addition to the starting rotation coincided with the offense becoming more fluid and the defensive uptick.
Offensively, the Knicks score 113.9 points per game (13th). New York shoots 45.3% from the field ranking 25th and 32.2% from the perimeter ranking 27th.
Defensively, the Knicks allow opponents to score 113.5 points per game (16th). New York allows their opponents to shoot 44.8% from the field and 34.1% from the perimeter ranking second (they’ve climbed up nine spots in a few games) and seventh respectively.
Obi Toppin (non-displaced fibula fracture) and Ryan Arcidiacono (ankle) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Kings are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Knicks are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Kings are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against New York.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of New York’s last 5 games at home.
Free Sacramento Kings vs. New York Knicks NBA Prediction:
Not sure how sustainable this current Knicks’ defensive juggernaut is or whether the Kings can channel back-to-back defensive efforts but I’m guessing it’s far more likely to be a higher-scoring affair simply because any team scoring less than 100 points is such an outlier these days.
NOTE: I’m picking the Kings with the presumption at least one of Fox or Murray will play (they’re both listed as questionable). Check the pre-game injury reports until confirmation is made of whether they’re in or out and if both are out then switch to the Knicks winning and covering.
