Portland Trail Blazers vs. San Antonio Spurs Odds & Last 5
Head-to-head last season, the Spurs won the series three games to one, while this campaign, the Spurs won the series two games to one.
In history, the teams have met on four occasions, with the Spurs taking the last three series, including the most recent meeting back in 2014.
Everything is a bonus for both these teams as they get to give the young cores experience in this environment. Sure, the Spurs have more expectations on them, but they are at least a year ahead of schedule, with many pundits picking them to win Larry O’B.
San Antonio is favored by 11.5 points with an over/under of 220.5 points.

Portland Trail Blazers vs. San Antonio Spurs bottom line:
Despite taking the first game by double figures, the irony is the Spurs did NOT have their best game. Wemby put up numbers, but it wasn’t his best outing either. In fact, his squad actually performed better (based on point differential) while Wemby sat, versus when he was on the hardwood.
The young squad got its feet a bit wet, and that doesn’t bode well for Portland that San Antonio is likely to play better as the series progresses.
Moving forward, the Blazers have some tweaks and decisions to make. Do they try to double Victor or let him get his points and elect to focus on the backcourt instead? Since it feels like no one can stop Wemby, the second part of that equation makes more sense.

Trail Blazers Spurs Free Pick: Blazers +11.5
Here is my Trail Blazers Spurs free pick.
Victor Wembanyama had the spotlight on him again, and he didn’t disappoint, but you get the feeling there is much more to come.
Portland made runs but weren’t able to close the gap with Avdija needing more help. Perimeter shooting was a problem with the Blazers, shooting 26,% (10 of 38), which won’t get the job done. They held their own on the boards, but allowed San Antonio to get out on the break and lost that battle 20 to 11.
One area to watch is whether the Blazers tweak their strategy on how to guard San Antonio. In Game 1, instead of having Donovan Clingon guard Wemby, they elected to have Toumani Camara do the heavy lifting while the former was on Castle to put some size on him and force him to shoot.
That part of the equation worked out, so we should expect Clingon to stay on Castle. How the Spurs adapt is the question. Will they employ De’Aaron Fox more with the ball handling and to push the pace?
In their 62-wins the Spurs shot 37% from deep, but in their losses, they shot 31%. Portland ranked 15th in perimeter defense, holding teams to 35.8%.
Avdija did his job for Portland, but can someone else step up? Scoot Henderson had a good game, and it feels like Shaedon Sharpe has more to offer.
Also, keep an eye out for the Blazers vets (Jrue Holiday/Jerami Grant) to take a bigger role in Game 2.
Although I expect the Spurs to win the series, I was impressed by the Blazers stick-to-it-tiveness and like them to keep the game close, so take the points.
