On Monday, January 11th the Phoenix Suns face the Washington Wizards for the team’s first meeting of the 2020-21 season.
Last season, the teams played twice with each club winning one contest. The Wizards hold the all-time advantage winning 66 or their 129 meetings.
Phoenix Suns
Chris Paul has often been called the best leader in sports. Following up his effect in Oklahoma City last season (and the seeming lasting effect of his presence) he’s now bringing the same mindset to the Suns who are sitting firmly in the second seed in the Western Conference.
The veteran point guard dropped a double-double of 15 points and 10 assists in the latest victory for Phoenix against a very worthy opponent. That team is the Indiana Pacers who are experiencing a similar type of success to the Suns in the East.
Phoenix broke out in an offensive display in that contest winning 125-117. Mikal Bridges exploded for 34 points and if he’s not already he should be on your list for Most Improved Player candidates.
Devin Booker delivered a typical effort of 25 points, three rebounds, seven assists along with two steals. The trio of Cameron Johnson (16), Jae Crowder (10) and Jevon Carter (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
Cameron Payne missed the last match with an ankle injury and is doubtful to suit up on Monday. Jalen Smith (illness) is out.
Washington Wizards
If you wondered whether the Wizards were going to join the growing list of young teams who are trying to improve their defense I’ll save you some time — they ARE NOT!
Evidence to that was experienced in the Wizards’ recent games where they set NBA offensive records. The Philadelphia 76ers and Wizards combined to score 92 points in the second quarter last week.
On Saturday, they joined the Miami Heat to score a combined 91 points to open their match.
Both set NBA records for cumulative points scored in a specific quarter. The latter was more impressive considering neither Bradley Beal nor Russell Westbrook were playing.
Yet the most important takeaway from these stats is the Wizards lost both games and are on a three-game losing streak entering action Monday.
In the loss to Miami, Garrison Mathews led scoring with 22 points. One of the few bright spots in the loss was the play of rookie Deni Avdija who registered 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, two steals and hit five of his nine 3-pointers. Most impressively he had no turnovers.
Rui Hachimura (17) Robin Lopez (13), Mo Wagnar (13), and Jerome Robinson (12) were the other double-figure scorers.
Beal (health and safety protocols) is questionable while Westbrook is out with a quadriceps injury. Thomas Bryant (knee) is questionable.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
Demonstrating how quickly things can change in the NBA it was just one season ago that Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul were traded for each other and now both are on different teams.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Suns ATS
Given the fact the Wizards All-Star starting backcourt isn’t likely to play combined with the Suns’ recent road success it’s surprising the spread isn’t in double digits.
