Thursday, December 31st finds the Phoenix Suns traveling to play the Utah Jazz in the clubs’ first meeting of the 2020-21 season. The Suns arrive as one of the hottest teams in the Association sporting a 3-1 record. Meanwhile, the Jazz is close behind with a 2-1 record.
In a rarity, the Suns and Jazz have each won 93 of their 186 all-time meetings. Last season, due to the pandemic the clubs only played twice with the Jazz winning 96-95 on October 28th and the Suns winning 131-111 on February 24th.
Phoenix Suns
The addition of Chris Paul and Jae Crowder to the Suns’ youthful core is paying dividends as they share the best record along with the Clippers and Kings in the Western Conference.
Defense is the key as the Suns have enough depth, stars, and diversity within their roster to send out various players who can get a bucket when needed.
In their most recent contest, they took down another young squad who’ve started well — the New Orleans Pelicans. The win arguably highlights the Pelicans’ lucky start while the Suns seem destined to continue winning given their dedication to playing with constancy on both sides of the court.
To wit, the Suns won the match 111-86 shooting 40.4% from deep nailing 19 perimeter bombs. Balanced scoring was the key to the victory with six Suns players scoring in double-digits.
Jae Crowder led the way with 21 points while the other veteran Chris Paul focused on playmaking dishing nine dimes to go along with his nine points, and two rebounds.
Cameron Johnson continues to impress dropping 18 points while the trio of Mikal Bridges, Cameron Payne, and Deandre Ayton each scored 13 points. Dario Saric made his season debut pitching in with 10 points.
While the Kings had created issues with their bench outperforming the Suns recently, Monty Williams made tweaks and in this victory, the reserve unit outscored the Pelicans 47 to 27.
Jalen Smith (ankle) and Abdel Nader (concussion) are questionable for Thursday.
Utah Jazz
It took everything the Jazz had to garner their second win over the Oklahoma City Thunder who present a scrappy defensive unit.
Donovan Mitchell hit a shot with seven seconds remaining on the clock to put Utah up 110-109 and then held his breath as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came close to winning the game in the dying seconds but Rudy Gobert’s length helped make the shot just difficult enough to miss the mark.
The win for Mitchell and Gobert was their first ever at Chesapeake Energy Arena a venue the Jazz had lost in on 17 consecutive occasions!
Five Jazz players reached double-figures with Bojan Bogdanovic leading the way with 23. Gobert (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Mike Conley (20 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists) each delivered double-doubles. Mitchell (20) and Jordan Clarkson (16) were the other double-digit contributors.
Shaquille Harrison (hand) is questionable for Thursday.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Utah Jazz NBA Prediction:
Ironically, the Jazz has more of an offensive focus while the Suns have shifted to concentrate defensively. The team who channels their older scheme to combine with the new emphasis will win the match.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Suns +3.5
Although the Jazz is the favorite they needed Mitchell to pull out a win over the Thunder while the Suns have looked strong even in their single loss.
