Suns vs. Thunder Gameday
Sunday, April 19th, the OKC Thunder begin their journey to repeat as NBA Champions with their first round opponent being the Phoenix Suns.
The latter arrives on just a single day’s rest after winning the play-in match and the eighth seed. In contrast, OKC’s core had a full week off to rest and heal. Granted, the Thunder didn’t know their opponent until Friday, but you can bet the Thunder coaches were prepping for both the Suns and Warriors in advance.
Once again, the Thunder were the cream of the crop, finishing with home court throughout the playoffs via a 64-18 record, which surpassed the preseason win/loss projections of 62.5 wins.
Phoenix, as noted, is the eighth seed finishing with a 45-37 record following a Cinderella-type season as the youngsters revamped the roster and exceeded preseason win/loss projections of 30.5 wins.

Phoenix Suns vs. OKC Thunder Odds & Last 5
Last year, the Thunder rarely lost more than once versus any team, and the Suns were one of many teams they swept. The teams met five times this campaign, with the Thunder winning three of those matches.
Although the clubs have met four times in the postseason (each winning twice), those matches occurred when the team was still in Seattle.
Early on, Phoenix looked poised to grab a cemented playoff seed, but then was saddled by recurring injuries and had to battle it out in the stretch run just to make it here.
Similarly, the Thunder dealt with injuries all season long, missing their second-best player for all but 33 games, but excelled in spite of it. With the hardest stretch run strength of schedule, the Thunder didn’t miss a beat. They delivered a 19-1 result prior to taking their foot off the gas for what in hindsight seems like a strategic move, as they lost to the Nuggets (helping keep them in the middle bracket) and these Suns.
The Thunder are favored to win Game 1 by 14 points with an over/under of 215.5 points.
Suns Stats
Phoenix ranks 17th offensively (114.2) and tied for ninth defensively (112.9) while they are 15th in net rating (+1.4) and rank 24th in pace (98.14).
The West’s seventh seed averages 112.6 points per game while its opponents average 111.1 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Phoenix averages 24.6 (27th) and 43.1 (20th), respectively.
Phoenix’s team leaders* are Devin Booker for scoring (26.1 points) and assists (6.0), Mark Williams for rebounds (8.0) and blocks (0.9), and Jordan Goodwin for steals (1.5).
Perimeter shooting is a strength for the Suns, who shoot 36.1 percent from deep with six players shooting above the league average.

Phoenix Suns vs. OKC Thunder bottom line:
Not to disrespect the Suns, but the biggest question of this series is whether the Thunder will need more than four games to get it done.
This series will offer more insight into OKC for the long run than it does about Round 1, as we’ll learn just how healthy and productive Jalen Williams can be and whether the Thunder can translate their regular-season dominance into the postseason.
Certainly, they got lucky with the draw because if the favorites advance, that means OKC will only have to play one of the Spurs or Nuggets and will also face one of the injury-riddled Lakers or youthful Rockets.
They say every NBA Champion has to experience some luck, and it sure feels like the Thunder have luck on their side in this tough Western Conference.

Suns Thunder Free Pick: Thunder -14
Here is my Suns Thunder free pick.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been even better in this campaign than he was last year and sure looks poised to collect a second consecutive MVP, and possibly Conference/Finals MVPs if all goes to plan.
Working against them is the fact that no team has won back-to-back titles for seven seasons since the Warriors did it in 2016/17 and 2017/18.
It’s hard not to grab the brooms before the first tip of the ball, given OKC’s myriad of strengths, such as their defensive prowess, treasure trove of depth, experience as reigning champs, and MVP superstar.
It’s the Jalen’s in this series that offer the largest question marks. How healthy and ready is Jalen Williams? How good can Jalen Green be as a Robin to Booker and will he be thrown or drawn to the bright lights?
As for the Suns, they offer a hard-hitting, stellar defense and are a club that competes on every play. Devin Booker is capable of winning a game on his own, but can he do that on more than one occasion?
Equally compelling is what sort of dynamic Dillon Brooks can offer in this matchup and whether he’ll be able to get under his fellow Canadian’s skin or the younger Thunder players.
The biggest question they face coming into the series is just how close they are to rediscovering their offensive rhythm and returning to the chaos masters on defense.
As good as they can be defensively, they simply aren’t in the same tier as OKC, and will be challenged to be productive from the perimeter with the swarming Thunder defense.
Ultimately, this initial match comes down to rest versus rust in terms of the spread. Yet, the Thunder dealt with so many players being injured that the rest time has to pay dividends (if not immediately, then in the later rounds).
Take the Thunder to come out and make a statement from the tip.
